Protests can be effective--but they do have to be large-scale. You can bet the politicians are watching the size of the crowds.
Your average Kingwood protester is hoping he is / will be part of real change. I dont know why you would think they are exhibionists. They get plenty of derisive looks and honks. Takes some thick skin to tolerate that. Why would they welcome that?
