Just about an hour ago we were in line at the grocery store and I let a young mom with her son around 6 ahead of me. One, she had less, and two, kids get antsy. As she was thanking me, her son was pointing to a Pepsi. I told him, soda is bad for you. He shied behind mom and she burst out laughing. We had a nice chat. Before they left we said have a good night. And oh, little man, no soda and have a happy Halloween. He nodded and said he's ready for some fun. Mom lol again.
Then had a nice chat with the young men checking us out. I grabbed one case of soda while he grabbed the other and put it in my cart to roll out. I said, thought I'd take a load off for you. He said thanks, lots of heavy cases a day. Each one is a help.
So I don't think it's wrong to chat up someone and especially when a teaching moment comes.
My friends talked till they were blue in their faces to their kid about what he was doing was real bad. He came looking to cut my grass. We sat on the porch and had a long conversation. At the end, I told him, I'd love to put you to work but, I'm not gonna knowingly fund your drug and booze habit. Get your **** together and come see me. He came around as he did clean and sober up. I put him to work.
His parents didn't know why he listened to me and not them. Because he sees me as friend and you parent. Then we moved and two years later he got back with the bad crowd. He committed suicide on my birthday and his mom had to call me a few days later. Sorry I missed your birthday but.........
Sometimes, somebody besides a parent just gets through.
