Seeing those vines gone and the trees thinned out is a good thing. There will be less competition for root water during the hot summer strengthening the remaining trees. Maybe grass will start growing again under them adding a more manicured look.

Exactly! They made a point of telling me how much damage Beryl did but their "clean up" operation did 50x more damage IMO. Several homeowners that back up to the green belt are furious.

First of all. THANK YOU for sharing. I"m happy something is being done with those medians. Count us in the camp that hasn't been happy with the thinning of the medians. That same overgrowth has been there the entire 25 years we've lived here. It hasn't hurt anything. Nothing. The drive from 59 to Town Center has always been dense, wild, unique and slightly mysterious. We loved that. Now it looks terrible to us. Barren and unkept. I wrote's Fred's office and said as much. I've heard the reasons why, and none of them are compelling. Thinning the medians was NOT a priority, or even a good idea, in our humble opinions. OK, I"m done venting. Thank you again to all who are a part of the solution.

Fanofdogs :
The barren look of the medians that have been cleared is in preparation for planting new native trees and bushes. Trees for Kingwood and Council Member Flickinger are working with the Texas A&M Urban Forestry group to plan the plantings. If the vines and Yaupon are not eradicated, the new trees will not be able to compete with the faster growing vines and thicket vegetation. We have lived here for 51 years and the medians when we moved in were full of healthy native trees, not a vine covered thicket. Back in the early 1970's, Kingwood was the Livable Forest it was advertised to be, it was not promoted to be the Livable Thicket. I don't like the barren look either, but it is temporary, give trees a chance.

Fanofdogs : Please take this kindly. Medians look horrible because the bulk of those vines are Kudzu vines. Kudzu vines are an invasive vine that suck life off of the trees. I lived in Georgia before where this is a massive problem along roads everywhere because it was unattended. Kudzu will eventually kill all the trees here as it is doing there, and will have to eventually be cleared out then to replace with new trees. New trees in those places will take years to regrow and property values will plummet. Regardless if removing kudzu tackles of all the problems at once, it has to be a priority.

Oaks are pretty, but only for part of the year. Mixing them in with the evergreens though wouldn't be bad. Actually, I would prefer mixing in trees or plants that would add lasting fall and winter color. Oaks don't add lasting color! 😪

I used to live in a neighborhood in Arlington, Tx, called The Oaks. In the winter is was one of the most drab neighborhoods to live it.

BrendaT :
Thank you. This all make sense and you've made a convincing case. Perhaps my view has been a bit myopic, We were here when they re-did the front of Kingwood. Kingwood had such a mysterious wooded entry off of 59 back then. There were towering trees there in front that were cut down and replaced with baby trees needing decades to grow. This is an eye of the beholder thing, but everyone we know preferred the previous look in front of Kingwood. It's that situation in mind, that has shaped my feelings on this current project. Happy to hear there's a plan to beautify the medians. Still not sure I'm 100% on board with the scorched earth approach, but I really do appreciate the explanation.

GoldenGirl :
The oaks on WLHP are live oaks and not the oaks that brendat is referring to. The live oaks stay green year round, have beautiful branches and canopies.
