golfshot : Thanks, I should pay more attention to notice people who may need help, and should find a way to ask that would be well received - I don't want to bother people that are trying to select from a range of options and would prefer to think it through without interruption. But I guess that's the nature of helping, where most people appreciate being asked, and only a small minority would be irritated by unwanted interruption. Gotta play the odds.

Spork : Would it really bother you if someone asked you if you needed help finding an item? I help people all the time and they appreciate it.

Mt favorite employee at the little Krogers is Ryan in the pharmacy. He always puts a smile on my face.

It seems stores keep moving things around, just when I get used to where things are. I forgot which Heb is remodeling and also Walmart in Atascocita is remodeling so it's taking me longer to find stuff.

I prefer Kroger also. As far as the employees there, I do agree with you.

My late BIL was a diehard HEB customer until he went to Kroger at 59 with us. He was an amputee and used their electric carts. He was surprised at how friendly and helpful employees were.

Probably to keep shoppers in the store longer to buy more. I often find myself buying something that I wasn't planning on getting.

When I used to work grocery/ retail back in the 90's, I loved helping people, especially sacking their groceries, most were regulars. When we didn't have a customer and we're stocking candy, gum or cigarettes, we had to stand by our lane and ask if they were ready to check out . Now you hardly see lanes with cashiers, I don't understand why they have too many closed lanes , seems like a waste of space to me. Nowadays customers are using self checkout scanning and bagging their own groceries. It doesn't bother me if the line is going quickly and we don't have to wait on someone to finally come to your machine if there's an alert. I hate when that happens it's usually for nothing.

I'm not yet wired to think I need help. I love figuring things out because I love learning. So when someone interrupts my thought process, I usually politely decline an offer. I think there are circumstances where I could appear to be puzzled but I'm actually in thought and the interruption would be disruptive. But I would never want someone to think they bothered me.

I would probably process it differently if it was a store employee who was doing their job, like at ACE hardware. But my goal is to be able to do anything a fellow customer can do at a store like HEB. I would be hard on myself if a fellow customer intervened to help me.
