I get up every two hours and run the water for a few minutes and flush all the toilets. I also wait and run my dishwasher during the middle of the night. I leave all the cabinets and closet doors open. I haven't ever dripped faucets or opened the attic.

Gingersnap : I do the same as you - back during the freeze of 2021 I had water supply to one bathroom where the pipes are on an outside wall freeze, but the temperature was in the teens, and had stayed below freezing for a few days.

Gingersnap : I did the same with my dishwasher last time. Because we had freezing temps for a few days I would run the water till it was hot at each faucet every time I washed my hands and other family members did the same. Then I dripped it at night.

I'm turning the water off and draining my galvanized pipes. Then I will go stay with friends a few days (they also have a generator).

phylbob : That probably gives you peace of mind, but may not be necessary since we are going to get above freezing each day during this coming cold snap. Also, galvanized pipes are much better at handling cold than copper, or PVC. Granted, they are also older (our former house was built in 1974 with galvanized pipes, and never had a problem with a pipe break from freezing, or otherwise).

sweetie : You know I don't subscribe to the drip theory, for several reasons, but I also pay close attention to my house in cold weather. The only time I have had any trouble is when our outside temperature got down below 20 degrees. To me, the most important things are that outside pipes are covered, and the central heat is running in the house, with cabinet doors open to circulate warm air.

buffaloglenn : I had my pipes all covered last year or the year before and the one closest to my house in the half bath broke outside and water was gushing everywhere. And those pipes were wrapped. So I try not to depend on just wrapped pipe lol

sweetie : I would not like the idea of trusting renters with protecting the integrity of my property. Having renters that need to be told to protect my property is probably the reason I would not be a profitable landlord. The temptation to overspend to winterize my property would be too overwhelming for me. Kudos to those of you that have optimized rental income.

Spork : All the pipes are wrapped at every rent house. And I do hate depending on the renters. So I texted them today. I'll text them again Sunday and Monday and Tuesday until they're sick of me.

sweetie: Saw post from COH that indicated we should not let the faucets drip because if too many do this it messes their system up somehow.

sweetie : We also open up cupboards under sinks and the attic to keep it warmer.

Jonn : I do that too.Though it is a bit annoying...so worth not having to call for a plumber.

sweetie: Too bad Texas houses were not built for cold weather.

Nuisance : Right. My sister lives in Maryland now and she said they don't have to worry about that at all because the homes are built to withstand the cold.
