I always sort of suspected this. In some cities, you're required to separate your glass, plastic, cardboard, etc. But here you just chuck it all in the same bin. How much would it cost them in labor to further sort and separate it after collection? Not to mention picking out all the stuff that shouldn't have been thrown into the recycling in the first place, or pizza boxes that are too greasy, etc etc. It seems hard to believe that they're doing all that on the back end without it being in feasibly expensive.
You should share this with Amy Davis At KPRC. Let them dig into the details. She did an amazing job on the Drained series.
Recycling has always been kind of a sham. The things they can and do recycle are things like aluminum and glass. Which are organic, biodegradable materials. The single use plastics are the things we should be recycling, but they go right to a landfill.

That is exactly what I was thinking. With city of Houston water rates being so outrageous and thinking how much time it takes to get peanut butter out of the inside of a jar what a waste.
Yes, our village voted to recycle and we pay for the privilege! It's not what people believe it to be. For example, only 5 to 9% of plastic is recycled in this country. As

MissAmericanPie : I was given an AirTag for Christmas and i turned on my Apple lost item app and it lead us to this trash dump way in south Houston.
I am confused. Best trash has the red bins. City of Houston has the big green ones.

TEXASGIRLMAMMA : That is weird. We have a dinky red bin that is overflowing every week.
KWDfive : Our neighbor doesn't recycle and I asked why and was told because it just goes to the dump. We didn't believe it either so we kept putting our little red box out. But now we heard it from the trash people.
I am sure most of you are aware but I wasn't. BEST TRASH does not really recycle. For all the years we have been in Kingwood and paid Best Trash we have spent the extra time making sure all our plastic, cans, glass and cardboard went into the recycle bin, they provided. Thinking we were doing our part. I recently lost a Christmas gift that we thought went out in recycle. We followed the signal and it led us to the trash dump. There we learned that Best trash doesn't do recycle, the second truck that comes around to pickup recycle just dumps it in the land fill. Why bother to provide a separate bin and ask us to recycle if it isn't being recycled. I wonder if our HOA is aware and if Best Trash is charging extra for the second truck that supposedly handles recycle. Maybe we should be entitled to a refund for recycling that isn't being recycled.
