I am sure most of you are aware but I wasn't. BEST TRASH does not really recycle. For all the years we have been in Kingwood and paid Best Trash we have spent the extra time making sure all our plastic, cans, glass and cardboard went into the recycle bin, they provided. Thinking we were doing our part. I recently lost a Christmas gift that we thought went out in recycle. We followed the signal and it led us to the trash dump. There we learned that Best trash doesn't do recycle, the second truck that comes around to pickup recycle just dumps it in the land fill. Why bother to provide a separate bin and ask us to recycle if it isn't being recycled. I wonder if our HOA is aware and if Best Trash is charging extra for the second truck that supposedly handles recycle. Maybe we should be entitled to a refund for recycling that isn't being recycled.

This is upsetting to hear. We also take time to clean our items out and separate from the trash and roll the bin out each week. How did you hear this?

The recycling in Houston is contracted out to a company that handles it. Best is just the delivery service...we have one of the better rates of recycling in the US for major cities. ABC 13 even did an investigation last year. It does go to recycling center and is stored, but they are still building the capacity to handle all of it. What I do do you have?

Thank you to everyone who's posted this information. I had no idea how any of this was handled. I put my red box out every week and will continue to do so, it sounds like there is a plan for it, but maybe it's a little overwhelming.

Lugeruser : You followed a signal?? What kind of signal is there in your trash?

I am sure most of you are aware but I wasn't. BEST TRASH does not really recycle. For all the years we have been in Kingwood and paid Best Trash we have spent the extra time making sure all our plastic, cans, glass and cardboard went into the recycle bin, they provided. Lugeruser : My neighbor and I have always said that. All different materials go in the recycle bin. There is no one on the receiving end that is sorting out glass, cardboard, metal etc.

KWDfive :
Our neighbor doesn't recycle and I asked why and was told because it just goes to the dump. We didn't believe it either so we kept putting our little red box out. But now we heard it from the trash people.

Lugeruser : I heard a while back, from someone in the business, that only about 8-10% of what people think is being recycled, actually gets properly processed. All of the rest goes in the landfill along with all other trash.

Why bother doing "your part" if it ends up being useless in the end…

Wow - my kids had told me the same "dad, it's all going to the same place" but I never fully believed them - that's disappointing- thanks for the info

((But this reminds me - I need to pay my trash bill Emoticon

Texasdad :
This is not the City of Houston, this is BEST TRASH. The dump we went to had no recycle anywhere to be seen. We specifically asked and was told they did not recycle anything.

Weathergirl5 : Just think of all the water being wasted rinsing out those items that just go in the trash.

Again this is not the city of Houston. We pay Best Trash out of our pocket.. we were told, given a list and provided a bin in which to place recycled items. Which for years we have done. Only to find out that it was not true.

Curious what gift gave a signal? Airtag, earbud, new phone? Just curious....
