I guess the inflation had to hit some time. Gone are the days of $10 and $12 tamales of old. I haven't tried them in a while, im a granny's fan 😀
Fresh ones from HEB are good.
We enjoy shopping at Mi Tienda. Never had a problem at all.
For many years I bought Granny's and loved them. Then I had Kingwood Taco's. The masa was the best and they were much larger. They are more expensive than Granny's and get a bit more expensive every year, as does everything. Hopefully they will be as good this year. I will know Saturday! 😀
I ordered MiTienda tamales from HEB after your post. They have a coupon this week and they ended up being $8.99 a pack! We have always ordered from KTS or Granny's, so this will be a first! Thanks for the info! It has been a tradition in our family to have tamales on Christmas Eve!
So, this was a fluke, but ended up becoming a family favorite! I was making Ro-Tel dip, and always added cooked, crumbled sausage to it. This time, forgot the meat, so I opened a can of those tamales, removed the shucks, and chopped the tamales. Add them to the melting Velveeta and the drained Ro-tel. Everyone at our party Loved it, but could not quite figure out what was In the dip! The masa melts down and enriches the dip, and the spices and filling add to the taste, too. Now, we all make it this way!
If yall want authentic go to the home depot parking lot there at little York and buy them from the truck/ice chest 😀 thats the real deal
GiggleMugs reacted That actually sounds good. I will try putting tamales in the dip next time. DH likes sausage in cheese dip so we shall see……
Took me a lot of google-ing, but found that in the1950s it was indeed the Hormel canned tamales that had an olive in each tamale. Always a treat when mom brought a can home from the grocers.
They must have changed the recipe in the 60's when I started eating them. Amazing they are allowed on the market still. I think they are 50% lard
As a native from San Antonio Hormel tamales in a can is horrifying. Best Tamales are bought on any street corner on the West side of San Antonio. Never ever have been sickened by one.
