Stranger Danger Notices
2023-2024 Notices 3/6/24: Riverwood Middle School
March 6, 2024 Dear Riverwood Middle School Families, We want to take every precaution for our students' safety. With that in mind, I am sharing information with you about a stranger danger incident that was reported to us this morning by one of our parents. Yesterday after school, around 4:15 p.m., one of our students was walking home from school along Mills Branch Road. A driver in a white, landscaping pickup truck stopped to ask the student if they needed a ride home. The student immediately ran away from the truck and headed home. There was no further interaction between the student and the driver of the truck. The parent reported the incident to our campus administrative team and our campus officer was informed of the incident. Now is a good opportunity to talk to your children about the following safety tips: If anything unusual occurs, tell an adult immediately. Parents and teachers need to know what happened right away.
Walk or bike to and from school in groups.
Never talk to strangers or accept rides from them.
Arrange for immediate access to neighbors and other trusted adults who could answer questions or be contacted in an emergency.
Tour the neighborhood with your child to identify safe and dangerous circumstances.
Never get into a car, enter a home, look for a lost pet, or accept candy or toys from an adult, unless your parents know what you are doing and have given you their permission first.
I want to commend our student for following good safety procedures as well as the parent who reported the incident. Safety concerns should always be reported immediately to any school staff member, Humble ISD Police at 281-641-7900, or through the Humble ISD iHELP app. Sincerely, Matthew Roser

Are there waking groups where parents (maybe just one or two) accompany the kids to school? Sometimes having an adult present enough to stop any shenanigans. With all the say-at-home/work-at-home parents, I would think this could be organized pretty easily. (note: I'm not a parent, sorry if this sounds clueless)
Your story brings to mind something that happened to me back in the 70s also. I was walking to the neighborhood store (we all did this back then). I was probably 12 or 13 and our neighborhood was full of kids. Times were so different back then and we all walked around the neighborhood without a care or thoughts of any real danger. Anyway, as I turned off my street and onto a busier street where the store was located a car full of young men pulled up, opened the car door and told me to get in. Looking back I think I was in shock. I stood there on the sidewalk and thank God ðŸ™ðŸ»â¤ï¸ they shut the car door and took off. I was so scared I ran to the nearby store and waited inside until I felt like they were truly gone and not hanging around. My mistake was I didn't tell my parents until years later. It upset my poor mom so much and now that I'm a mom and grandma myself I totally understand the fear of my daughter or one of my precious grandchildren being abducted. Every time my DH and I go to Kingwood to visit them I find myself reinforcing to my grandchildren the importance of not talking to strangers or falling for stories like a pet is missing and will you help the stranger look for them or a family member is hurt and they need to go with the stranger. I reinforce to them that a stranger would NEVER be sent to pick them up. The two oldest ones tell me that they understand and have a family password that only they know of. It's such a scary world we live in now. 😔
