Sharing resources for the blind and visually impaired
I am totally blind and lead VIPSET, a support group for those who are dealing with vision loss here in the Kingwood/Humble area. I became blind after a car wreck so understand the need to find information, resources and support, which motivated me to start this group in 2009. We meet at 6:30 PM on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Kingwood Methodist Church, Room K103. The only cost to join is your time, but the returns on that time commitment can be tremendous.
I also lead the Houston Area Visually Impaired Network (HAVIN), a larger organization for the greater Houston blindness and low vision community that brings together my support group and 10 other groups and organizations to share information and resources. The 2026 HAVIN Insight Expo, our signature event, is being held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at the University of Houston College of Optometry. The keynote speaker for this year's event is also a Kingwood resident, Dr. Bert Phillips. If you don't know his name, a Google search of his name will let you learn how fortunate we are to have this distinguished man as one of our local residents.
If you know somebody looking for resources and information about vision loss and blindness, encourage them to contact HAVIN and come out on Saturday, April 11. The cost is $15 per person which gets them access to the program, exhibit hall, a light breakfast, lunch and enters them in the door prize drawing.
Our home page has a link to the registration page for this event.

I need to get the name of the organization my DH helps with. Someone can contact him if they need help reading something. I didn't know it existed or he signed up. They do not contact him very much but I thought it was neat.

I have two legally blind third cousins, sisters. It's a genetic thing. They turned me to an App called Be My Eyes. It's another great resource. You can answer a call from a visually impaired/blind person and help them with daily tasks. For example, one gal called me to look at the three packages of frozen meat on her countertop and tell her which one was chicken. She needed to defrost it for dinner. Another call was simply to help pick the correct color thread for a lady who was mending her child's torn pjs. Such a helpful tool!

Thanks for sharing about Be My Eyes. That's a very useful app. It's one of the go-to apps I recommend to people new to vision loss. I've used it and have a few friends and family members who are volunteers on the other end of it
.
