It's a tough call. If this were up north and there was a potential for a massive snowstorm, schools would be closed or at least be on a half-day schedule. Safety first for the students, teachers, admins, bus drivers.

If you have no kids in school, why the concern?

School calendars factor in a few extra days for "emergency"/bad weather, etc. No harm, no foul. If they don't use them, sometimes they'll pencil in an extra teacher workday or two later in the year.

It's all about student AND employee safety. There are "weather days" built in the school calendar. TEA can "wave" days, and they often do for use of weather days. Sometimes waiting to call it DOES put parents in a bind. I have no ready solution. Schools do try to accommodate!!

All of the television "the sky is falling" weather folks said it was going to be close to a deluge and flood at about 2:00 or 3:00 pm, which would have put buses driving through flooded streets, and all the mothers lining up in the rain to take their little princes and princesses home the two blocks they live from the school. It was strictly a safety thing for after school. Yes, in hindsight they jumped the gun, but the local school districts rely on the tv weather forecasts. They do not have their own meteorological departments. They are forgiven THIS time.

Palante : While on the surface it is for safety, but let's be honest, it is more for liability. If a bus has an accident and something happens to students that can be traced to a weather event with the storm, do you not think the district is going to be sued into oblivion?

No one is ever satisfied with whatever they decide. I saw an interview regarding closures and the guy mentioned how they have to consider the entire area, not just one or even a few schools. How employees have to drive in from out of the area, buses full of kids on the road, etc, etc. I will always be a play it safe rather than take a chance on people, especially kids, getting hurt.
