Saharan dust Ugh ! 😷 I've felt bad all day with a sore throat, cough, drainage, watery/itchy eyes, etc, and couldn't understand why. I didn't feel the typical "sick" feeling like I normally would when I'm sick with something, and then BrendaT pointed it out, and it made total sense. Saharan dust making its way to Houston Some of the dust can be sheared apart by upper-level winds. However, some will hold together and drop closer to the surface. Published: 11:23 AM CDT July 12, 2023 Updated: 1:04 PM CDT July 13, 2023 HOUSTON - Starting Thursday, a plume of Saharan dust off the coast of Africa will get pushed across the Atlantic Ocean. It's able to make the 3,000-plus mile journey thanks to traveling between 30,000-60,000 feet in the sky at times. It goes across the Atlantic basin and will make its way to the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico. ****This photo is a few days old but that red area has moved west which has put the dust over our area: That dust, although at high altitudes can mix down to the surface impacting air quality. The dust is a particulate that can irritate ongoing respiratory conditions. There are some positives to the natural cycle of saharan dust transport... it does help to suppress storm formation across the Atlantic among other things. Additionally, the dry and dusty air lowers the humidity over the water, stunting cloud growth and preventing storms from becoming organized.
