I still...gave them a chance and went back about a month later to try again with my $20 gc. They told me that they couldn't take it! WTH? I said ..you gave it to me. I find this incredibly sad since I was friends with the original owners, Horace and Cindy. They were exceptional people and put their heart and soul into their restaurant. I can't tell you how many times Cindy would go in the kitchen to make my dinner herself. She, herself, was a wonderful cook! I've lived here 40 years and we would all go there at least once a week. Cindy and I had a tradition of each taking a Chinese cookie, writing each other's numbers down, and then playing the TX lottery with them. There was one time when I was going to night school (30+ years ago) that neither of us played our numbers and, wouldn't you know it, one set of numbers came in!! There were 2 winners that night when there could have been 4. The jackpot was 24 million. Cindy cried for 3 days. I'll always remember that. After they retired the restaurant was in the hands of another family member, but it was never the same. And I think it was sold again later. I truly miss Cindy and Horace and the "old/original" Mencius.

grinchy : Oh no! I love their food. I can't believe they closed. Hopefully they'll pay their rent. I know that happened to the dollar store right there by them about two months ago and they were able to reopen.

grinchy : I loved Mencius as well. Haven't been in well over a year. Last time we got it the food just wasn't good. I knew something must have changed. We are typically Akashi and JJ's folks now.

We moved here in 1980 and Mencius was our go-to restaurant for Chinese, Casa Elena for Mexican and J Christopher's for Italian. Actually, there weren't many other choices, but these restaurants were really good.
I am not even a big Chinese Food fan, but Mencius was always fresh and tasty. Cindy and Horace were great! Things went downhill when they sold. I hope the new owners bounce back.
