Do I need an electrician?

MrNachos : That is definitely cause to call an electrician. Kingwood has frequent outages, but not a lot of voltage dips. Something is wrong in your panel, most likely.

Had a similar issue, ended up being my main breaker. Could not get a replacement so we ended up replacing the whole panel. So as others have advised, unless you're electrical savvy get an electrician.

Does it do it just when the AC kicks on ? If so, it's pretty much normal in KW.

It would be worthwhile having it inspected by an electrician if only for peace of mind. We are in hurricane season when things can get crazy.

Voltage drop:
When the AC compressor starts, it can cause a temporary dip in voltage, which is enough to make lights connected to the same circuit flicker or dim.

I stalling a startup soft start capacitor and surge protector on your AC unit minimizes this and will help protect your AC from damage due to power surges. With the heat coming in the next few weeks, brown puts could be an issue soon

billcherie2 . A house electrical panel is a split phase system. There are 2 separate 120v phases an A phase and a B phase. 220/240 appliances use both phases to get 240v. The 110/120 normal house circuits (outlets and lighting) should be equally devided between each phase (½ on one phase ½ on the other). If one of the phases combined circuits are drawing more current then the other phase , it will see more of a current drop affect then the other. So lights may flicker more in one room than another when the added draw of the AC kicks in. The AC is on a separate dedicated circuit but is both phases.

Yes, get an electrician to check it out. It could one of several things going on some not so bad and some....bad. It could be just a bad breaker, a lose connection, a lose nuteral wire, a bad underground feed line that is deteriorating due to damage, or other problems.

This also happened to us and we lost a leg off our main line and had an electrical company replace the breaker box and all the main power lines from the "big green box" outside to the house. MGBguy : That's what we're about to do. When our generator is on, and the AC kicks on as well, its a big load so we're installing a soft start.
