buffaloglenn: I've seen firsthand what an express bus does to a Cadillac and all four of its occupants.  If it hadn't been for the buckled seatbelts, EMS would have had to start inventorying parts to figure out how many people had been inside.  So if we're down to gross tonnage, better stay off all the roads, regardless of your choice of vehicle.

It’s extremely common to see child kart cycles here in Denmark. Pretty cool things actually. Usually seen cycling in their dedicated cycle lanes (cars or pedestrians are NOT allowed in them), but can use the main road when no dedicated lane. The drivers here are extremely careful with cyclists, especially as the Law will see the car driver at fault in most, if not all collisions / accidents. Cyclists and pedestrians have “right of way” in all situations. No, I’m not kidding.Can’t really see the Kingwood drivers being sympathetic and giving her plenty of space when passing, or controlling their speed.

I was just wondering last night if this thread would make it to 30 or more pages.  Getting closer.  You know, we can post pics of ego boosting dangle balls, we can call the local news, we can get our friends to join and post in support, but if something good comes from this OP addressing SAFETY CONCERNS of a CHILD, then no one is left with the shoulda, woulda, couldas in light of a tragic accident. At least it shed some light on an action that, although originally good intentioned, was riddled with multiple safety concerns in anyone's book.

OK, Imma do my part to get us to page 30!Can you imagine the damage if a shopping cart were to hit a biker that wasn't wearing a helmet?On a serious note, ask any DR that works at TCH and they will school you rather quickly on calling a helmet a piece of styrofoam.  It isn't.  We had a neighbor, 15 at the time, that was hit by a car at the end of our street.  There was a 4 way stop sign.  A 16 yr old, new driver, was stopped as was the bike rider.  He proceeded through the stop sign, as he was there first.  She also proceeded through the stop sign.  She wasn't going 5 mph. She was driving a small 2 seater pick up truck.  She hit him.  He went down and hit his head on the curb.  He had a massive concussion and broke his arm, and his pelvis.  From that point on, he always made his younger brothers wear a helmet when riding.  My sons do now, still, because of this.  Had she been going any faster, the head injury may have killed him.  It takes less than a minute to put on a helmet.  Zero excuses for any parent to allow their kid to be on a bike without one.

I will add that since this became public "news" , this mom has added a flag, uses hand signals and doesn't seem to just go out in traffic like she used to. It is still annoying and potentially dangerous that she uses the car pool line instead of going to back of the school like all the other walkers and bikers. I also have not noticed her putting the kiddo on the bike handle bars...maybe he is safely in the trailor now. But, she definitely seems like she is being much more observent of the safety issues that were of concern. Thank goodness!
