oggie123 : Weight bearing exercise is a must but may not be enough. Walking is highly recommended as weight bearing and that has been my exercise of choice since I was young, both with and without weights.
grinchy : Exercise is particularly beneficial if it is weight-bearing. Swimming doesnt help.
Walking, tennis, pickleball, running--all would help IMO

Donnawisdom : Depends on your insurance, but at about $1,800 per injection, my previous insurance covered about half, and I paid about $900 one time, then quit them. Now I take generic Boniva (Ibandronate) - supposed to be once a month.

Sisyphus : It's a tough decision. I don't tolerate drugs well and already deal with TMJ. Osteoporosis drugs can have a negative side effect on jaw bones. Scary.

My doc recommends Prolia shots - one every six months. But my new insurance won't cover it, and it's pricey.
HappyinTX : I just checked with my insurance and it will cover 80% of the cost. Now I need to see if my doctor will submit a request to my insurance so I can get this drug.

Kittle : I am still young so taking the supplements and just continue with keeping active. Next bone density will show if this has helped.
HappyinTX : I considered it but it has many side effects like the others.
Kittle : I only have osteopenia but I take D, K2, Algae Cal, and some A. A affects bone health too but most people don't need to supplement it. I don't readily convert beta carotene to A and don't eat fortified foods so I add a little bit. I also eat a lot of leafy greens for magnesium and trace minerals. Weight bearing exercise is also important.
Kaylagirl : Medicare with Plan F supplement covers the DEXA scan 100% every two years. I don't recall having a scan when I was on private insurance however each insurance plan could differ. Perhaps checking with your insurance would be the most accurate info.
