Every year, thousands of legal permanent residents from around the world dream of becoming United States citizens. To help them achieve their goal, these individuals are invited to attend the Citizenship Forum at Lone Star College-Kingwood on Saturday, Jan. 25. The workshop is from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Student Conference Center (SCC).
This event is a partnership with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities, and BakerRipley. Sponsors for this year are the New Americans Campaign, Univision-45, Amor-106.5, UniMàs Houston, and ABC-13.
"This workshop is an event the college looks forward to every year. Building a stronger relationship with the community is always a goal of the college," said Kristen Johnson, director of student diversity and equity. "We want the community to know that we are truly here to serve them."
At the Citizenship Forum, the first 75 participants will receive free one-on-one citizenship application assistance from NALEO Educational Fund, BakerRipley, and the Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities. To receive services, applicants must be 18 years of age or older, of good moral character, and a legal permanent resident for the past five years or three years if married and living with a U.S. spouse. Applicants should also have knowledge of U.S. history and government and can read, write, speak, and understand English.
"Our goal is to engage and assist legal permanent residents with their citizenship applications," said Elizabeth Billie, Texas state director for the NALEO Educational Fund. "Helping attendees become U.S. citizens supports family reunification, assists with citizenship for their children, provides the right to vote, the freedom to travel, and the eligibility for government jobs."
Participants are asked to bring: a lawful permanent residency card; state identification or driver's license, all police and court records (including arrest, citations, detainment, and charges), addresses, employment and schools for the last five years; information on all trips taken in the last five years along with current and expired passports; and the address and dates of birth for all children.
Volunteers are also needed to help attendees with paperwork. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to those who sign up. Please note that bilingual skills are not required.
