According to the National Weather Service, a cold front has moved into the area that will cause temperatures to get below 30 overnight on Tuesday.

What you should do:

This is the first potentially freezing weather we have seen this season. Take time to prepare your vehicle and home NOW for the winter weather season.

At home, remember to protect the "Four P's": People, pets, pipes, and plants.

People:

Keep warm and stay inside, if possible. Have extra blankets on hand.
If you need to go out, dress in layers and wear hats, gloves and a coat.
Check on family and neighbors, especially those who may need extra help.
If your home becomes too cold, or you lose power, consider going to a library or mall to warm up.
Observe heater safety
- Never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water.
- Keep heat sources at least 3 feet away from furniture and drapes.
- Never leave children unattended near a space heater.
- Protect yourself from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by installing a battery-operated CO detector.
- Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or similar devices indoors.

Pets:

Bring pets inside and move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas.
Have food, water and a warm place for animals to rest.

Pipes:

Disconnect outdoor hoses, drain and store in a protected area.
Wrap exposed faucets and pipes, especially those outside the house or in unheated crawl spaces, attics, garages and other areas.

Plants:

Bring potted plants inside or store in the garage to provide extra warmth and protection from wind.
For cold-sensitive outdoor plants, put down extra mulch and consider covering with a sheet or tarp to shield the plants.

In your vehicle, you should always have an emergency car kit.
Be sure you also have a flashlight, extra batteries and blankets.
Check the tire pressure in your car before driving.
Have a full tank of gas.
If your car breaks down, call Tow and Go or the Motorist Assistance Program (MAP) for help

I think I am "winterized". I haven't done anything to my sprinkler system since I don't think this freeze will effect it. Everything else - tender plants and such - have been moved to the covered patio with a 150 wt light to add some heat and isolated with a plastic shield. Anything else is one it's own! I've got too many dang plants as it is. If they live - okay, if they freeze - too bad. There's more where they come from.

Okay ... so I went out and wrapped the piping with the pop-off valve, near the house, with a blanket and then a plastic garbage bag for the sprinkler system. I still don't think the under ground piping is at risk.

turn your pool pump on

@Redmulch : No problem - the system for the pump is set to come on when the air temp gets to 32 deg - thankfully, I don't have to worry about it.

I'm loving it. House is warm enough and if I go out I wear a warmer sweater or an extra layer. And it will pass in a day or so.

@Gigix4 : If it's going to be down to 25 or so there in Kingwood, you should at least drain the main part of the irrigation system. You probably don't need to drain the lines that are under ground, but your irrigation pump needs to be protected.

I'm with you on the plants - if they live, that's fine, if they freeze, too bad!!!
