Council Member Dave Martin would like to make District E residents aware that Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) has officially obtained a signed easement agreement with Bear Branch Trails Association and Friendswood Development Company to conduct much needed maintenance on the Bens Branch drainage channel between Northpark Drive and Kingwood Drive.

Council Member Martin, HCFCD, Kingwood Service Association and Bear Branch Trails Association have worked hard over the last eighteen months to finalize this easement agreement. Bear Branch Trails Association and HCFCD had to request a transfer of ownership before they could begin maintenance. Friendswood Development Company had to sign off on the agreement because after annexation in 1996, the drainage easement returned to their possession. The updated HCFCD easement agreement was signed by Bear Branch Trails Association earlier this year, but was pending changes from the Friendswood Development Company.

This week, HCFCD received notice from the Friendswood Development Company that all proposed changes to the agreement were accepted, including widening the channel from 70 feet to 100 feet. HCFCD crews will mobilize in the area in the next week to remove silt and trees from the choke points as a first step.

"Thank you to Friendswood Development Company, Bear Branch Trail Association, HCFCD and all community leaders who helped move this process along. This is a huge accomplishment for the Kingwood area. The District E Office will continue working with HCFCD to address the major and minor areas of concern, providing updates to the community as they become available."

This isn't an accomplishment. This is doing what should've been regular preventative maintenance after the fact. 4951

All of this is for naught unless the root cause is addressed: Taylor Gulley. Taylor Gulley needs to be cut straight back to the East San Jac and maintained (much like the bayou is cut and maintained in Riverchase). Presently, Taylor Gulley is unmaintained past the back of Woodstream and terminates in a hard left hand turn into a mess of downed trees, bramble and illegally dumped trash. Until the inadequacies and disrepair of Taylor Gulley is addressed and properly maintained, everything upstream will continue to flood. Although the East San Jac crested at around 8:30 pm during Imelda, the water in Woodstream kept rising until 1:30 am due to the poor drainage infrastructure of Taylor Gulley. 4951

I hope the changes to Bens Branch drainage work helps, and that Taylor Gulley also gets the work it needs. @Fuegofrio have you contacted Dave Martin's office with the information you posted above? 4951

There was a drainage ditch on the Greenbelt between Sherwood Trails and Elm Grove. After annexation the city stopped clearing it and it started flooding. The children had to walk along the main streets to get to Elm Grove Elementary. I called on several occasions to report it but to no avail. Now that area always floods. 4951

FYI--Google map Kingwood in satellite view and compare where Taylor Gulley's maintenance ends vs. the bayou that exits Riverchase

Stop messing around and put concrete drainage ditches in more places. These so called drainage channels are outdated. What worked in 1910 won't work today. 4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA : They're two completely different issues. Taylor Gully is at the back and north of Kingwood by Woodstream, Dogwood Acres, and Walden Woods. Bens Branch runs between Hunters Ridge and parts of Bear Branch, Kings Forest, and behind the high school then down behind Fudds and the library before bending around behind the YMCA and eventually coming out just past the harbor area. 4951

Thank goodness. Bens branch drains a huge part of Kingwood and has severe erosion in some spots, esp by BBE and lots of sediment by the YMCA. That said, the area by the Greenbelt in Bear Branch needs to have debris and trash cleaned out but don't destroy the natural curves and beauty there 4951
