Market research shows the need for trained instrumentation technicians is growing at a rapid pace.

This upward trend is resulting in companies eagerly searching for qualified professionals to fill vacant positions. To answer this demand, Lone Star College now offers an Instrumentation Technology program at its Process Technology Center located in Generation Park. The facility, a satellite location of LSC-Kingwood, also houses the Process Technology program.

"Our priority is to teach and train individuals to become the best instrument technicians in the Houston and surrounding areas," said Oscar Ramos, Process Technology Center dean.

The Instrumentation Technology program, which opened fall 2019, prepares students for entry-level careers in the chemical processing industry. As instrument technicians, their responsibilities are to maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and replace process instruments. According to PetroChemWorks, trained technicians will also work with different devices to measure and control various assessments such as pressure, temperature, and chemical composition.

"They will learn the technical skills and knowledge to perform these functions in petrochemical plants, refineries, power generation facilities, pharmaceutical plants, and food and beverage industries," said Darrell Mayon, program director.

Along with coursework, students will learn to become technicians through state-of-the-art simulation equipment and hands-on applied technology. Upon completion of the two-year program, graduates can earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Instrumentation Technology or an Instrumentation Technology Certificate Level II.

Lone Star College will host an Open House at the Process Technology Center on Sept. 26 from 3-7 p.m. Attendees will learn more about the Instrumentation Technology and Process Technology programs.

"This event is open to the community, especially those who are interested in pursuing a career in the petrochemical field," Ramos said. "We will have faculty members, staff, and students available to answer all questions."

The LSC-Process Technology Center is located at 14001 Lockwood Road. For additional information on the Instrumentation Technology program, visit www.lonestar.edu/Ins trumentationTechnolo gy-AAS.htm or call 346-773-3801. 4951
