Repairs to the 59 southbound bridge over the San Jacinto River will be completed sooner than anticipated!

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is close to completing the I-69 (Highway 59) Eastex southbound mainlanes bridge over the San Jacinto River. To facilitate the opening of the new bridge to traffic, crews will need to close the following to return the roadway to its original configuration:

* I-69 Eastex southbound mainlanes between FM 1314 to FM 1960, multiple mainlanes closed continuously beginning Friday, June 22 at 9 p.m. through Monday, June 25 at 5 a.m. At least one lane will remain open.

* I-69 Eastex southbound exit ramp to Sorters McClellan Rd./ Townsen total closure continuously beginning Friday, June 22 at 9 p.m. through Saturday, June 23 at 6 p.m. Detour southbound on the mainlanes to the exit ramp to Will Clayton, continue on the southbound frontage road, U-turn at FM 1960 to the northbound frontage road, continue on the northbound frontage road to reach Townsen or Sorters McClellan.

* I-69 Eastex southbound entrance ramp from Sorters McClellan Rd. total closure continuously beginning Friday, June 22 at 9 p.m. through Saturday, June 23 at 6 p.m. Detour southbound on the frontage road to the entrance ramp from Townsen to reach the mainlanes of I-69 southbound.

* I-69 Eastex southbound mainlanes between Townsen and FM 1960: Left, (Inside), shoulder closed between 5:00 AM on Monday June 25 and 5:00 AM on Tuesday July 03.

During Hurricane Harvey, the main channel of the San Jacinto River shifted, impacting the I-69 southbound mainlanes bridge over the river. As a result, the depth and alignment of the river changed affecting the foundation of the bridge. The bridge was reconstructed to overcome future shifts and to restore the load carrying capacity on the bridge.

The project was expected to take six months to complete but the contractor, Webber, LLC Construction, worked feverishly to get it done sooner.

Pleasantly surprised, I am tired of seeing people speed through the 55mph signs. I drive that stretch of Frwy 4 times a day, and the total disregard shown through the work zone is just appalling. People don't care and refuse to follow the posted speed limit. 4951

@Fiza2813 : Yep - it will be nice to have the normal speed limit again so I can blast through there and don't have to slow down to below 70 until I exit 59. I don't care and refuse to follow the speed limit. 4951

Just remember they are starting the reconfigure this weekend - that doesn't mean that everything will be reopened in the original configuration by Monday. They will have to remove CTB's, possibly re-stripe and make sure that the roadway wasn't damaged by the CTB's and construction equipment. This is just a first step to going back to normal. 4951

@buffaloglenn : I am not by any means driving Mrs. Daisy, with that being said I do and will continue to observe posted signage. I would much rather be safe than sorry at the end of the day. 4951

@Fiza2813 : I've been driving for 32 years, and have yet to put anyone in greater danger at 70 than at 55, on a freeway. Also, when I come through the construction area, the construction workers are still asleep or have long since finished their shift. 4951

A tip of the hat to TxDOT for fixing the bridge ahead of schedule and for planning for the future with the bridge foundations. 4951
