klenek : The sediment removal project was initiated nearly two years ago. Sediment removal from the Bens Branch channel under Kingwood Drive and the Diversion Ditch channel under Kingwood Drive were also identified at the same time. Both of these projects were completed last year. There were also several storm sewer outfall pipes that had failed which were identified for repair. All of these other projects have also been completed. It is important to make downstream improvements before upstream improvements. It is not beneficial to improve channel flow upstream of an obstructed section of channel. So the sediment removal from the Diversion Ditch under Kingwood Drive needed to be completed before the sediment removal from under the Northpark bridges could be performed. Sediment removal from Bens Branch under the Kingwood Drive bridges (behind the old HEB) needed to be completed before the Bens Branch channel under the Tree Lane Bridge can be addressed. It also takes time to do the necessary engineering for a project and to get funding allocated for these projects. It would be nice if million dollar projects could be completed faster, but the reality is these things take time.

Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin announced the City of Houston has started a major project to remove sediment from the Kingwood Diversion Ditch under the Northpark bridges. The project will restore flow capacity of the Diversion Ditch and significantly reduce flood waters entering Kingwood through Bens Branch. Risk of structural flooding of homes in Woodland Hills, Hunters Ridge, Bear Branch and Kings Forest impacted during Tropical Storm Imelda will be significantly reduced. St. Martha's School, Kids in Action and Pines Elementary School will also see a reduce risk of flooding. Project funding is just under $1,000,000. Project also includes repair and improvement of Bens Branch channel under the Tree Lane Bridge. This is a significant expenditure by the City of Houston to benefit Kingwood.

ChrisBloch : correct me if I'm wrong , but wasn't the the northpark expansion project delayed and required more funding becuase of natural wetlands around the Northpark bridge?

ForestFinds : it may take some time before work starts as the Flood Control District has a backlog of projects it is working to complete.

ChrisBloch : Is there an estimate of how much time it will be before the issue will be addressed on the ditch that runs behind the businesses on Northpark Dr?

Ticagro : It seems to me that this poster is part of the Mr. Martin's staff ergo the we would be this political figure's spokesperson. Isn't this essentially a politician's press release?

ChrisBloch : how about addressing the ever increasing pot holes in the streets? Instead of patches, how about the COH correctly repair them? And the correct synchronization of traffic lights, especially down Kingwood Drive........ that especially seems like it should be an easy fix.

along same topic: the city workers seemed to be getting ready to clean out the storm sewers along Big Springs in SWH yesterday. Also were fixing the big leak at the Parkdale-Big Spring water line.
Still waiting for them to fix the one in my front yard - I have a minor swamp with a little bubbling center...

eltigremadera : I can assure you that I am not on Dave Martin's staff. As I indicated in my posts, I am a retired engineer. I was friends with Stan Sarman for several decades. Stan was a great resource of knowledge on how all utilities in Kingwood were designed as Friendswood Development built Kingwood. When flooding occurred, it is normal for engineers to ask why and to look for wats to improve the drainage to avoid future flooding. As private citizens, we can't get projects done, we have to work with the City Public Works Department and the Harris County Flood Control District. These organizations are in the end the means to get things done. Working with Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin, Commissioner Tom Ramsey, our former State Representative Dan Huberty, and our State Senator Brandon Creighton helps to get needed projects prioritized and funded. Dave Martin is term limited, so in the future we will work with whomever replaces him. Dan Huberty has already been replaced by Charles Cunningham. Unfortunately Stan Sarman has passed away, but there are a number of other engineers in Kingwood who are working to identify and promote flood mitigation projects. To get projects done we need the help of our elected representatives and when they do get a needed project funded, it only makes sense to give them credit for that. Some folks think they can get more done by complaining about their elected representatives, I am not one of those folks. I believe if you give credit where credit is do, we have a better chance of getting more done for the benefit of Kingwood residents.

FlipZ : I do not know of any wet lands near the Northpark project. The only delays I am aware of were due to getting right of way issues resolved and all the necessary permits and funding finalized.
