#msg6023300Cbear : I thought they only charge you to read your meter if they determine it is your problem.

Wiseowl : I thought that if you requested them to come and read after you received your bill, they charge. Who knows! We are at their mercy.

#msg6023255Cbear : I read it - that's how I know the actual reading is less now a week after they mis-read it. Hopefully their charge to come read it will be less than the $1300 or so they are trying to overcharge.

123abc : Good. I read mine regularly.

$680 here. Not the first time. Had an $800 last year

I get that it's based on usage, and these are definitely "first-world problems" but I have a pool, and my wife put a lot of time, effort, and money in her gardens. If I don't fill the pool to the appropriate level, the pump motors will burn up. If I don't water the plants/grass, they'll die and all that time/effort/money will be for naught. It's a crappy choice to have to make and water delivery shouldn't cost as much as the City of Houston makes it cost.

Ronstang :
My water bill is consistently $500+ monthly! I've had a plumber check for leaks - nope. I've had my sprinkler system checked for leaks - nope. Checked the pool for leaks - nope. I've called the city (multiple times) with no luck! We are a family of 4, with one in college, so 3 most of the time. We run our sprinkler 2x a week and have a small yard. Any advice or insight you can offer is welcome.

That happened to us... the month BEFORE we moved in (December), when our house was empty. $800 bill and 35,000 gallons used - it wasn't possible; no one was here! I called the city, and I am still struggling with high water bills.

Average bill is around 60-70 a month. 2 people, no pool, no sprinkler, little watering. June was $674.00. August 598! Checked everywhere for leak
Called and called and argued. Finally they sent someone out to check it. Found a small leak-- supposedly on my neighbors side. Filed a report, we filed a "form". Called and called some more. Heard nothing-- except our water bill payment is late!! Not paying it. September's bill??? $67.00!!!

I miss UD145 before Houston took us over. My bill used to run $35 per month. It is now the same water and delivery system, just cost more.

My bill in the summer is consistently $300-500. Two people, have a pool but limit the sprinkler. I call every time with no relief. It is insane.

AI Summary

does city of houston charge to come out just re read water meter under billing dispute
The City of Houston does not charge customers for a re-read of their water meter during a billing dispute. Customers can request a re-read if they believe their bill is inaccurate, and this service is typically provided at no cost.

Cbear : I am encouraged to read that - our bill for August was nearly $1000. I shut off the sprinkler system and September it dropped by $800. What repair company did you use? And how did you get them to refund you? I didn't think that was possible.
