So are they trying to say that Houston students aren't using enough of the libraries to keep them open. Do the Houston schools have so much trouble they need discipline centers more than libraries??

sweetie : It seems that way. Physical books are not the way most read anymore, people use the internet and Kindles and stuff like that. Books are portable inside our technology. And I do think discipline issues are escalating.

MissAmericanPie : It's good to read the article as it gives further details on the why. There is usually a reason that things like this happen.

Sounds like it is Houston ISD. Regardless, it is the most ridiculous thing I've heard of!
Who is going to be responsible to ensure kiddos check books in and out appropriately? Who is going to be responsible to ensure the library is quiet for the few kiddos that use it for researching and such? Makes no sense to me!

HISD to eliminate librarians, turn libraries into discipline centers at 28 campuses?

What? Just seen that on Click2

JandS89: There is a definite need to address student behavioral problems in all school districts. But I cannot see this as an action that will achieve any improvement .

sweetie : I'm guessing 8 out of 10 students don't know what the Dewey Decimal System is anyway ?
As far as discipline, Iv'e talked to several teachers who are scared to death of some of the students. The politics will ruin the HISD system

JandS89 : Well, if parents would parent and not put the job of discipline on school personnel...

JandS89 : At one HISD school, half the books had to be thrown away due to mold last year.

JandS89 : Librarians have been replaced by Media Specialists because there was difficulty hiring librarians. Now the Media Specialists (less pay than a librarian I believe) are out. Another consideration is that students do not read books as in previous years. Technology advances has changed many children and adult's attitudes about reading a book. Sad about these changes…
