So are they trying to say that Houston students aren't using enough of the libraries to keep them open. Do the Houston schools have so much trouble they need discipline centers more than libraries??

sweetie : THANK YOU!!

cbear : The new system being implemented in Houston ISD is changing teacher salary to reflect the salary most teachers deserve. Big differences in salary.

Having taught for over 30 years, I offer a bit of a different perspective-A disruptive student can keep an entire class from learning. I only removed one student in all of my years, but it was necessary for the other students (fyi-he never caused another problem). We've all heard horror stories about some of the discipline problems in the Houston schools. This might be a necessary step to ensure the rest of the students can learn. I'm guessing that in the beginning, those discipline centers could be crowded, but hopefully things improve quickly. As much as I hate to see the elimination of libraries, it might be a partial solution for all the problems in HISD

JandS89 : Reading is literally Fuel for a healthy brain! I am SO sad to see this happening to the kids; an awful decision on the school system's part.

JandS89 : Librarians have been replaced by Media Specialists because there was difficulty hiring librarians. Now the Media Specialists (less pay than a librarian I believe) are out. Another consideration is that students do not read books as in previous years. Technology advances has changed many children and adult's attitudes about reading a book. Sad about these changes…

Just a thought for now....Children are not taught cursive penmanship anymore, nor will they be required to read literature or any of the classics in the future. Ai & social media are here Plagarism is a thing of the past, so at test time go for it ??

And let's not forget there are a number of students who use
the library for doing homework since some students lack internet access. You can also think about this: most homes lack reading material. There are no books nor any other printed material. If a school is having issues with discipline, you don't punish the entire student body by taking the library away. Do what theyusedtodo. Transfer the problem students to a continuation school

billcherie2 : My step daughter teaches at a private school towards Sugar land. She teaches Sophomore World Religion. With the increase in technology for plagiarism, there is an increase in tools for teachers to catch it. She has seriously reprimanded some and I think maybe even failed a few because of it. Two years ago, there was a bunch that were cheating together and it was a big to-do at the school. Ohhhh, the parents...lol!! My little Johnny wouldn't do that!!!

There are 276 schools in HISD, so the elimination of libraries is occurring in about 10% of the schools. I'm guessing these may be the schools with the greatest number of discipline problems. Hopefully, this is only temporary until they can get some of the problems under control. No one wants libraries to be closed, but these schools are currently failing their students. I'm glad they are at least trying to address the issues

eighteen : There were 28 schools put into the program by the superintendent at the beginning. I'm guessing these are the 28 with the discipline centers-obviously the 28 at the bottom. The other 29 that volunteered for the new program could be anywhere throughout the district -possibly schools doing well and liking the changes. I don't know where the first 28 schools are located.
