Hin's is the worst

ET: Well, I am a Chinese food addict and I proudly admit it. I was born in Kingwood in 1981 & began eating @ Oriental Gardens before I could walk! I also delivered for them for years as a teen and in college. Probably eaten %99 of the menu over 2,000 meals there. Mencius 50 or so times, Hunan 100+ times, Jade Palace 15 or so, China River maybe 20 times, Hin's about 8 times, Asian City about 6, etc... 4951

ZMAN: Haha, I know Oriental Gardens & Mencius don't use MSG for sure. Hunan Garden does in certain items. MSG almost always gives me nausea. I've had friends who worked at Mencius & Hunan. I worked @ Oriental Gardens so that's how I know. Not sure about the others. 4951

@joshWa!: I agree!  We have been going to Hunan's for 20 years and it's still the same.  I know when I place my order at Hunan Gardens my food will have the same quality it had the first time I went there 20 years ago.  I have also noticed many of the staff have worked there for as long as I can remember.  I like it when the staff is consistent at a restaurant.  I feel the owners must be good people and they treat their staff right.       4951

TEXASGIRLMAMMA: The owners sold/tranferred ownership to their daughter and it's gotten a little better IMO. Still prefer the old interior. I believe Horace & Cindy retired and passed on Mencius as well recently. The oldest (1981 - Oriental Gardens) is still run by the original owners Leong & Jennifer. Gary, the original waiter/manager from the original, small location still works Fridays and Saturdays. I still can't believe I was basically a baby eating there. Had half my birthday dinners there growing up and started delivering for them before %40 of Kingwood was finished. Hin's isn't bad, just not up to the quality and originality of the other big three in Kingwood (OG, Mencius, & Hunan). 777 in Porter is actually quite good for the price. I don't like how Hunan just buys dumplings & egg rolls from a restaurant supply company rather than making them from scratch. Or how Mencius doesn't give you egg roll & soup with your lunch special even dine in. Then they have the nerve to not make you a lunch special for your favorite dish because "It's not on the menu." They upcharge you to change damn near anything except level of spiciness. That's why I love Oriental Gardens. Order whatever dish you want and get it on the lunch special, early bird, family dinner, Sunday special menu, etc... No extra charge if it's about the same price. None of the other Chinese restaurants in Kingwood do this. Then they want 50 cents or a dollar for fried rice instead of steamed or a tiny cup of hot oil. No thanks. That's utterly terrible customer service, especially for long time customers. 4951
