*(Please don't ever get gun piercings. They are very dangerous! Hollow needles at a reputable tattoo artist establishment only!)

Googled for you:

• Blunt Force Trauma: Instead of cutting cleanly through the skin like a hollow needle, a piercing gun forces a dull, blunt earring stud through the tissue using a spring-loaded mechanism. This tears the tissue and causes extra pain, bruising, and swelling.

• Cartilage Shattering: Using a piercing gun on structural cartilage (such as the helix or nose) can crack or permanently shatter the tissue, leading to structural collapse, severe scarring, or permanent lumps like auricular chondritis.

• Inability to Sterilize: Most piercing guns are made of plastic or parts that cannot be placed into a medical autoclave machine. Wiping them down with alcohol or disinfectant does not kill all bacteria or bloodborne pathogens.

• Infection and Disease Spread: Because internal parts cannot be fully sterilized, microscopic aerosolized blood and bacteria can transfer from one person to another, raising the risk of hepatitis and staph infections.

• Unsafe Jewelry Quality: Guns typically load low-grade, one-size-fits-all butterfly-back earrings made of metals that often contain nickel, causing allergic reactions.

• Poor Fit and Compression: The posts are often too short to accommodate normal post-procedure swelling, which can cause the jewelry to embed or sink into the skin.

• Lack of Training: Retail or mall operators receive minimal training (often just a quick video watch), leading to crooked alignment, improper angles, and bad aftercare advice.

(I learned the hard way.)

I was 16 in downtown New Orleans when I got my ears pierced at a jewelry store.. I didn't tell my mother that I was going to do it. They had a piercing gun. There was a little baby that had her ears pierced before me. I don't know why anyone would do that to an infant!

I had my closed piercing reopened at Magic Needle by Ray on 1960. I was very pleased with the care. I didn't like that there were few choices for the initial earring but that was a temporary complaint. I would rather go someplace clean and compassionate to chickens!

We took our girls to Magic Needle in Humble. The staff were great, and both girls did really well. Less traumatic than having that loud snapping gun piercing one ear at a time.
