buffaloglenn : so you told me that if the power goes out, my gas heater won't work right I'm trying to remember if you told me that
Nope.
Relays that control gas flow;
Safety devices, such as the fuel regulator and thermocouple; and
Blower motors, which push heated air through your ducts and exhaust products through the flue."
sweetie : Nope. " Unfortunately, the answer in most cases is no, since several important components of a furnace rely on electricity to operate. These parts include: Circuit boards that send information between the furnace and thermostat; Relays that control gas flow; Safety devices, such as the fuel regulator and thermocouple; and Blower motors, which push heated air through your ducts and exhaust products through the flue."

sweetie : What is an OCN????
An Operating Condition Notice (OCN) is a warning issued by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) when conditions threaten the reliability of the power grid. OCNs are the first of four levels of communication that ERCOT issues in anticipation of an emergency.

MissAmericanPie : Oh yeah. So if we lose power, I guess it will be our own fault. Seems like a good way to absolve any of their fault

Guys - didn't we just cover this last week? It is just a heads up about bad weather, not a notice that they don't forecast to have sufficient power, no rolling blackouts. They gave the same notice for last week's cold snap, and nothing bad happened, except a lot of people needlessly raising their blood pressure to a seemingly dangerous level.
What else do we have to ***** about?
buffaloglenn : Oh ok. So next week when it's going to get below freezing, do I need to tell my renters to open the kitchen cabinet under the sink and let the water drip?
sweetie : Yep I would, especially if it's an exterior wall where the plumbing is exposed to that cold. Open cabinets and let faucets drip.

MissAmericanPie : Even the bathroom cabinets?
I get a kick out of the Electricity Providers(not ERCOT or Centerpoint, which aren't providers) like Reliant putting out public messages asking folks to "conserve" energy...Fact of the matter is all their "plans" charge you LESS if you use MORE electricity.....If they really cared about energy consumption they'd charge LESS if you used LESS, no?..... Just like this month I'm on track to use less than 1000 KWhs....My electricity plan has it where I get a $30 discount if I use at least 1000 KWhs....So now I'm in the situation of having to use more electricity than I really need to in order to hit that target because if I do I'll actually save some money....
