I am not trivializing anything. I am outraged by the shoot first mentality you, generic you, are endorsing.
You, this time you, are excusing irrational and unreasonable fear.
It is dangerous.

My entire point, which you missed, is that there is plenty of blame for the entire situation and, as originally reported, not 100% the fault of the homeowner. The kid, the negligent parents contributed to the situation and bear some responsibility.

IF he chased a child down and off of his property, and shot him, we have a whole new ballgame. And IF he did that, I seriously doubt he would just be sent home . Things aren't adding up.

There were two bad choices here........
the kid made a bad decision to do the prank and the resident chose to shoot him in the back several times ! Both families will suffer a long time.

I seriously misinterpreted nothing.
Fear, reasonable or not, excuses completely.
100% of the unreasonable response is on the shooter. Let him or her sue the kid's parents for terrorizing him or her. Make them pay for whatever percentage of harm comes to them. Apportioning responsibility is what you call it, right?
