I'm well aware of available services. That is why I am upset by the complete elimination of a vital program. People love to just throw the word fraud aroun without factual support.

Complete elimination? Please post where we can find the confirmation that this is going to happen.

Thank you for stating that. When children with autism become adults, there is no more ABA for them, counselors, and other medical doctors they need. We have to do our own ABA at home at our cost and training.

Sorry, we've been a little too busy having friends and family help us submit letters to Paxton's office and all our state representatives and also make calls. We also support and volunteer with the Texas Society of Autism and the Disability Rights of Texas group who are helping to fight this. It's the best way to constructively spend time fighting this proposal that still has to be voted on.

Nothing for free. I have some things going through UT for me and various therapys. Some of it came about because of the cognitive being done for my stroke. I really like them. Does require insurance, copays, etc.

About 20 yrs ago and living in KW I was looking for therapy and psychiatrist for DS high functioning autism. All the places and Drs were across town Galleria, Katy, Bellaire and Memorial area. At that time, I was a mom of 3 small kids and DH was in a different state during the week. It was impossible to find someone that could fit your needs and child's needs in this area. Autism and mental health is the least accessible care you can find. If you are lucky to find someone they don't take insurance. Now, people are having a hard time paying bills and making ends meet and don't have money to pay for treatment or never did. My nephews son is Autistic and they are now having to take him to speech and occupational therapy. They are lucky to have insurance but their out of pocket is $500 a month and they are just starting out on this journey. Then add he was layed off from his job and can not find a job in his field. At least he is home to take him to his appointments but when he gets a job it will be awful. They are also paying for after school child care for another kid and can not stop because she will loose her place when he finally lands a job. I feel for anyone child or adult dealing with these issues. People who have never dealt with autism or mental health do not have a clue how frustrating it is not just for you but the entire family.

Smoothwaters :
One of several reasons we left Kingwood in the last year. It is frustrating. Now both Mom and I are getting the medical help we need and are close to all we need. I think one of the aspects people take for granted is the amount of time and money it takes to even get a diagnosis. I guess people think you go to a doctor and have a 15 minute evaluation and they just rubber stamp you autistic. It can and does takes years and money. I went through three 4 to 5 hour assessments for the autism alone. Before that congnitive assessments for the stroke. As odd as it sounds, the stroke actually moved me forward on the list for the autism assessments. I think once I started getting the help I needed everything is slowly starting to balance. I still can't help but think if I had had help earlier in life I wouldn't have been so stressed that I had the stroke. I miss having infinite energy and painting. Only one painting finished now in almost 5 years.
