I'm about as conservative as they come and I do appreciate street art........IF IT IS DONE LEGALLY, WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT BEING PAINTED! Tagging, as Evan Carroll (aka ProblemAgain) advocates, is done at the expense of the taxpayers & business owners and the community at large! It's not doing it at the expense of the Tax Payers. Who would vote for government to come and paint over art? What kind of silly conservative are you? 4951

The conservatives you so desperately crave attention from?

There was a company in Portland that owned a building.  One night, someone painted on one side of the building.  The business owner tracked down the painter and hired him to paint the other three sides. 4951

EvanCarroll: Since it's obvious that you did not open the link that I provided previously, I'll help you out and cut & paste it here for your convenience.  Hope it helps.Houston treats graffiti vandalism as a
crime, not a prank. If you are caught defacing property, expect to
face legal consequences. There are also penalties for anyone who
contributes to the crime, whether that person is the parent of an
offender or a business owner.

STATE LAWS
Texas Penal Code §28.0 makes it a crime
to intentionally or knowingly make markings with aerosol paint,
markers or etching and engraving devices on tangible property without
consent of the owner.  Markings can include inscriptions, slogans,
drawings or paintings.  Penalties are assessed based on the amount of
loss suffered by the property owner and may range from fines of up to
$2,000 and/or confinement for up to 180 days, to fines of $10,000
and/or confinement for 5 to 99 years.SOCIAL CONSEQUENCE OF GRAFFITI
Over the past two decades, graffiti has
become a growing problem for many U.S. cities.  When discussing the
consequences of graffiti vandalism, social scientists and economic
advisors often refer to “the broken window” theory.  That theory draws
a connection between the occurrence of graffiti and the residents’
perception of a diminished quality of services.  Such perceptions have
numerous negative consequences on communities.
The unconscious connection between graffiti and more
serious crime causes property values, business growth and tourism to
decline.  Graffiti also attracts other forms of crime and street
delinquency to the area, slowly replacing residents’ sense of
neighborhood ownership and safety with fear, anxiety and frustration.
In recent years, graffiti has spread from urban areas to
rural and suburban communities.  Cities across the nation spend
thousands of dollars each year to clean up graffiti.  The social and
economic consequences of graffiti vandalism attest to the necessity of
abatement programs. And here is another bit of information I suggest you read -- I won't be spoon-feeding this one to you. City of Houston Visual Blight Ordinance

Just noticed that my whole cut & paste didn't take! I need top open
the laptop again to get it all so Evan Carroll can see the fines the
CoH puts on private business owners for the damages done by graffiti! 4951

TexasOma: Just wanted you to know, I didn't read any of that. Conservatives don't make sense. Someone comes and puts up art on a "private business" or the community's assets and you want to take it down at my expense?! Lol. I don't want to pay for that. You are all for such big government, it's sad.

EvanCarroll: Soooo - you are the typical liberal mindset - if you don't like the direction of the conversation, you stick your head in the sand. No - I don't expect the government to pay for the clean-up ---- I expect the criminal graffitier to be arrested and sentenced to clean up his/her graffiti at his/her own expense. Why should the business person have to either spend money to clean the mess or be fined for the mess happening?  Are you so against small business that you want them to suffer for the crimes of others? And --- if this was the true art that you claim, why do you indicate that it should be taken down? Did you change your mind or can't you make up which side of the socialist program you want to stand on?  What if you were a small business owner trying to stay afloat in these hard times - would you want to spend money to cover up graffiti? Would you want to be fined by the city for not covering up the graffiti? Would you want to lose business because customers don't want to come to your graffitied building for fear the graffiti means gang activity?  Put your liberal socialist self in the place of others for a change and think about how others might feel!!!!!

I never said it should be taken down. So leave it up. And, if you catch the guy we give him props for the wicked tag. Putting someone through the "justice" system is expensive. No need in doing for a mere free art contribution. I like how you think. 4951

EvanCarroll: Well dear sweet Evan, bless your little heart!!!! --- No, I do not think the graffiti should stay up - you were the one who indicated in your post that said "you want to take it down at my expense?! Lol. I don't want to pay for that." IMO that means you want it taken down but don't want the taxpayers to pay for it, for the little business person to shoulder the expense to take down the offensive graffiti. I'm also interpreting your statement as you don't want the criminal to pay for his crime.  But, that's socialist thinking - what better should I expect.
