Has anyone noticed how light the coins from the U.S. mint are these days? I paid cash for a small item at the Town Center Walgreens recently and received 2 dimes in change. At first I thought they were Canadian but they weren't. They were no heavier than the old pull tabs on soft drink or beer cans. Will this be the next coin the mint is going to discontinue? 😱

I deal with cash so little that I don't see coins much anymore, but am now curious.

I did notice that. I don't care for nickels either. It's like they keep changing them and seem to be "wanna be" quarters. I have to look at them to be sure they are nickels. I'd be ok with just quarters. Then maybe the teens working at the registers could count change for a dollar.

Yes, I received a dime like that as well. Why can't the mint keep coins the same?

It really messes them up if you give bills and the exact coins! Ha! Ha! It is a sad state of affairs!

Just scanned the news but I can't find anything that relates to the metal formulation of coins changing this year, so they should be the same. I found some comments that weight can't be changed either, at least not without due consideration and notice because it would effect machines that use coins.

One article said that now that pennies are going away, nickels may be next. They also cost more to produce than they're worth.

Looking on line all dimes since 1965 when they removed the silver all weigh the same 2.268 grams down from the previous 1965 silver weight of 2.5 grams. I pulled out my scale and weighed several random times the newest was 2025 the 2 oldest were 1975 and 1982. All weighed the same 2.3 grams on my cheap scale. I did weight them in carats also to see if there was any measurable difference, and they all weighed the exact same amount.

I'm not sure if the coins are any lighter.

My theory is (like everything else these days) the gravitational force is decreasing.

Case in point:
I used to weigh about 30% more than I do now. Still have all my original factory equipment (minus 4 wisdom teeth).

Just a thought 😎
