As someone living with the life long consequences of being struck by a drunk driver, it was hard for me to even open this thread. My father attempted to sue the person who hit me, but only for medical costs. Not for the anguish that he caused the entire family, not for my future medical needs, or any of that other stuff. The man had no assets to get any funds from him anyway, so the suit went no where. The man who hit me was a grown man. This young man was a teenager, one who knew before hand that the decision he made was wrong, just as his companions did. They weren't little children, and they were not yet adults. They were trusted by the adults in their lives, and this time the trust was misplaced, and foolish choices were made, and the consequences are horrible. I don't know how anyone can slap a price tag on a life, or grief, so suing for outrageous sums of money just seems like greed. The cost to lay the girls to rest, court costs, and the like seem like they should be paid. The young man should be speaking about what his poor choices have cost the other families and his own at high school assemblies as part of his atonement for years to come. Nothing anyone does will bring back the girls, or end the sorrow of their family and friends. Paying the cost of grief counseling if the families' need it may also be a part of his atonement. It is a very sad situation. I hope the girls families are getting help if they need it. Heartache from losing a loved one is something we all windup learning to deal with in our own way. 4951

Emilio11 : You go on and live your life, there are two girls that should be that aren't. Yeah, they made a dumb choice too, just like this young man, the difference is that this young man also made the choice to drive in addition to the underage drinking. He is at fault, he made that choice. Now he has to go on living with the consequences as do the families of the girls that chose to get in the vehicle with him. He can grieve for his lost childhood, and his lost friends and their families. He can grieve for the chances that he won't be given because of the choices he made while young and foolish. He has to own his choices and the consequences of them. Hiding from them, will only lead to future poor choices because he won't have addressed his personal responsibility. 4951

Emilio11 , It is his fault he choose to drink and drive, it is the store fault for selling the alcohol, it is the parents fault for letting him drive, it is the girls fault for getting into a car with a drunk!
At 17 one is considered an adult, Prayers for all but consequences happen and the guilt will never go. 4951

I'm hesitant to lock a discussion about a local tragedy that affected many peoples' lives, that is also not breaking forum guidelines.We've had other events happen locally: shootings, murders, suicide, etc., that are also discussed on the forums not infrequently. I think events like these are a local concern, and citizens discussing them probably should not be censored unless they're breaking established forum guidelines.But, I would ask everyone to try to keep it tactful in this thread, and treat your fellow KDC'ers with respect. Also remember that the people involved and their affected family members live here locally and are likely your neighbors. 4951
