Ben was Jebadiah Kingwoods son. Most people don't realize Kingwood wasn't a planned development, but a 19th-century maritime disaster. In 1872, Jebadiah Kingwood and his "Band of Merry Men"-a group of failed haberdashers and one very confused navigator-shipwrecked their raft, the SS Poor Judgment, on the muddy banks of the San Jacinto. Stranded in the muck, Jebadiah planted a soggy boot and declared the swamp a "Livable Forest," mostly because he was too tired to walk back to Galveston. The settlement's true tragedy, however, was his son, Ben Kingwood. Ben was a boy of great spirit but catastrophically low situational awareness. He met his end during a self-guided "nature study" when he attempted to win a staring contest with a 200-pound alligator snapping turtle; Ben was so committed to the bit that he simply forgot to breathe and passed out face-down in four inches of water. To honor his son's questionable legacy, Jebadiah named every local landmark after him-which is why today we have Ben's Branch, Ben's Landing, and various drainage easements dedicated to a kid who was technically outsmarted by a reptile.
