8 years ago today - Harvey On this date, 8 years ago 🌀 Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Rockport, TX as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 130mph winds (145mph gusts) Harvey would then linger over the mid and upper TX coast for days producing widespread catastrophic flooding. The storm directly claimed 68 lives in Texas…the deadliest hurricane event in TX since 1919. 125 billion in damages made Harvey the second costliest US Hurricane only behind Katrina when adjusted for inflation. 1 trillion gallons of water fell over Harris County alone which would run Niagara Falls for 15 days. Over 50,000 sq miles Harvey dropped 16.6 trillion gallons of water which would supply the entire US water needs for 280 days. Storm total rainfall of 60.58 inches was recorded in Jefferson County and 47.4 inches at Clear Creek and I-45. Flooding reached historic levels in many areas.
