Just bring your daughter to school an hour late, they should be gone by then. You could probably tell the administrator why you did so in person.

I think it's an outgrowth of the various projects that attempt to set good examples and establish relationships for adolescent/preadolescent boys. We certainly have many young teens who could benefit from this.
BUT... I think many girls will in fact to leary of that many unknown men on the first day. If these were in fact the fathers and grandfathers and uncles or neighbors of their friends and even perhaps known... I know the incoming 6th graders from Foster were displaced last year for its reconstruction. As the mom/gmother of girls, I know moving to the middle school has always been scary for them in spite of the orientation efforts in 5th grade.
Is there a plan to help the girls be more comfortable too?

High fiving 100 different men sounds like a good way to catch the flu on the 1st day of school. Definitely tell your kids to wash their hands after

I've read through the thread and understand where your concern is coming from. I don't feel like this is an event that is meant to be intimidating, though. The only problem I had with it is mentioning that "any man" from the community can attend, whether they have a student attending there or not. I'm not ok or on board with that either, unless they do an extensive background check on these guys. I'm sure your daughter would feel safer and more comfortable if she had you go with her as a show of support, and your presence would serve as a comfort to her that she's still safe (if you can go). My son attended KMS and the principal and staff were good, supportive and understanding. I don't think they would knowingly, willingly or actively put the kids in a dangerous situation, but I do think reaching out the parents that have concerns about this is also vey important. I also feel like they could have done a survey first to see how the community would react to scheduling an event like this first, then used the feedback to make it where everyone would feel comfortable supporting this. I think everything will be alright, but just wanted to let you know I understand your concerns.

You have a valid concern. Think back at that age, when you were a student. Imagine seeing your dad, grandpa, or any positive male role model wishing you to have a great 1st day of school! I would have to see my dad, grandpa, or uncles in their military gear at the 1st day. Let's just give it an opportunity to see what happens. I'm sure if this sucks or an epic failure, it will be discontinued

ZMAN : More of a KMS question. I know it's a way to get parents and guardians to become volunteers or involved with the schools. There were always requests for volunteers to serve at lunch, sporting events, and concessions.
