....does the white color wear off of the band, the areas where the ring touches your finger? I have a ring that was purchased from a jeweler, and is supposed to be white gold (not plated) and good quality but, after 2 years of periodic wearing, the band looks like it's yellow gold. I know that a ring that is rhodium-dipped will do this but this ring was purchased as white gold, not dipped. Have you ever found your white gold rings to do this? 4951

There is no such thing as white gold. Not in nature. Jewellers create it. The used to do so by adding to the melted gold but now most just plate. The gold content is real, 14k, 10k..it really depends on the wear and tear on your ring vs. The thickness of the plating. Getting it redipped is the only way to restore it.

@BooBear: I've just never had a white gold ring do this. And @Goodnightmoon has worn hers for 35 years (congratulations on 35 years, by the way!) and hers are as white as they were new. What the heck? 4951

@QueenB:

I only wear white gold because yellow just looks odd against my skin tone..

Like most things..they were made better back then..they would actually change the color of the gold by adding different metals. It's cheaper to plate noe. They may still color it to a certain point, but it will show a difference.

Your other option would be to have the plating removed and have a nice yellow gold setting. 4951

@BooBear: I'm the opposite of you, yellow gold looks terrible on me. I just can't believe the ring is plated....seems like a ripoff but maybe I just didn't know enough about it. I'm sad that the newer white gold is made so badly. As usual, the older stuff is better I guess.  4951

@QueenB:

Jeweller are not required to tell you it's plated or how thickly it's plated because the ring itself is gold.. just keep in mind of all future purposes, since white gold isn't real, to find out exactly how it is made white..id be willing to bet a LOT of sellers couldn't even tell you.

Thi link I posted above is interesting.

Mine are still white -- worn everyday for 34 years. However, this was interesting, I had no idea of the process to make white gold. 4951

When I was young, I thought "white gold" was just silver and they called it white gold to charge more.  Later, I found that white gold is an alloy of gold and other metals that turn it white/silver.  @BooBear's article explains the differences of alloyed white gold and white gold that has been plated.@QueenB:  You can probably just get your ring(s) replated to restore their brilliance.I agree with the comments about jewelers telling customers if a white gold item is plated.  If not specified, I'd have to assume that it's plated. 4951

My mom had a white gold ring set, she wore it everyday to he best of my knowledge and over 60 years and it was still white when she passed away. She only removed it when she had to, like in the operating room (she was a nurse).

My first wedding band was white gold, but it tarnished which as I understand it meant the silver content was too high.
