A dog will never view a baby as a pack leader. It just doesn't work that way. Many dogs have trouble viewing they own owners as pack leader, a baby is just not physically/mentally capable of exerting leadership over a dog. what needs to be taught is boundaries to both the baby and dog. It's harder for a baby to learn but that's why you have to be extra diligent and use the crate to put away the dog if needed.
Bites happen to adults even when they are sitting next to a dog. There could be all sorts of triggers. I do not know the story of the airedale but it could have been resource guarding the mom and bit the kid. There are a lot of stories where a dog will growl/bite/lunge at another person while they are near or sitting on someone's lap.
N+T, my sister has a 3 year old child. The baby was raised with a golden retriever from a breeder bought as a pup, and an adult pit bull adopted from a shelter. One day last year the golden bit her baby on the face while they were all on the couch together, both parents were right there. They euthanized the golden. To this day, their pit bull remains harmless and adores that kid. Both dogs were around the kid since it came home from the hospital. 4951
