The issue isn't demeanor.  The issue is power.  A pit bull has extremely powerful jaws, so that when it bites it does a lot of damage. 4951

I think all the dog fighting news that gets aired has definitely made people think twice about this breed, but if they really research the pitbull history, it will bring light to this misconception of human/dog aggression.

Some pitbulls are aggressive towards humans, and the idiots that own these dogs encourage their aggression mostly because they are thugs themselves and want a dog that is considered badass, so to speak.

However, pitbulls were never bred to attack or bite humans, just the opposite. This breed is truly misunderstood on so many levels. Seriously, if a lab and a pitbull attacks a small child in separate cases, the media is going to go for the pitbull attack, it's crazy. Any large dog has the potential to seriously hurt or kill someone, but pitbulls will get all the negative publicity.

I have a shepherd mix, she recently started fighting with my chow mix, she is short fused and she latches on to where you cannot get her to let go. So now I have to keep them separate. They say pitbulls bite and lock their jaws, I say so do alot of other breeds. I think this is common in many dog fights whatever the breed.

I have only been bitten by a handful of dogs......shepherd & shepherd/chow mixes, chihuahuas and a dachshund mix. The shepherd bit me when I was a child trespassing in someones backyard, he showed me, lol. 4951

Why do "thugs" choose pit bulls to fight?  Why don't they use other breeds to fight? 4951

I was at the store one time and had a guy from animal control(he was in uniform) in front of me and we started talking. He told me how he had 2 dog attacks on humans that week on the same street. One was a Lab and the other was A Pit mix. I said oh yea I think I saw the pit mix story on TV but he looked more boxer to me, and he said yea thats it ,happened few days ago. I said well why didn't they report on the Lab attack....he said I dont know media didnt show up on that one even though the injuries were more serious. 4951

They were bred for dogfighting in the 16th century. However, they were only bred to fight other dogs, if they bit a handler during a fight, they were culled. It was an important trait that was bred in them. If you have ever owned a pitbull, it is amazing hows gentle they are when taking food or treats from your hand, they are not taught this, it is bred in them.

My other dogs will take off your fingers if you give them a treat and not open your hand flat, my pitbulls are so gingerly when they take food from my hand, it's pretty amazing. 4951

Wrong fcab, rational people understand that, however the majority of joe public thinks pit bulls are the devil reincarnate. Has nothing to do with power, more about how a dog looks. 4951

The were culled(killed) for human aggression because back when dog fighting was legal and wide spread they actually didn't fight them to death. The handler would go in the ring and separate the dogs and pull the loser out to keep from any serious injury. They HAD to be non human aggressive in order to successfully stop the fights. 4951

lola, nothing personal meant with this comment bc you know I love you and your dogs, but I remember your dogs being somewhat unpredictable and aggressive towards kids and they are not pit bulls. How can you fear and speak out against one breed while owning/loving/promoting other breeds that have actually displayed aggressive behavior towards humans? 4951

Most any dog will bite if they are fearful and threatened, not just pitbulls.

Pitbulls just have a bad rap! They look tough and some people like that.

I dress mine in pink and sometimes I paint her toenails. I don't want people to be fearful of her, she is so sweet and loves everyone, but she's not crazy about little dogs, and if any dog challenges her, she won't back down, but neither will my sheppie mix, she'll go for it! 4951

Yes, he has also been attacked by a lab, a boxer, and a husky. Your point? 4951
