Respect for babies vs dogs is "mutual?"

Um...ok!

Sorry...the dogs take a backseat to a newborn baby. If the dog can't hang, ADIOS!

Can't wrap my brain around most of this discussion...especially choosing dogs over having children (unless said person never wanted to have children to begin with, then that's cool). But to decide to be childless based on a love for dogs alone...just don't get it. Something wrong there. 4951

Yes,my dogs are very good..and little. Rocky was the big one at 14 pounds. Could not reach crib if they wanted to. 4951

I have something wrong with me for preferring having dogs instead of having kids? lol

I actually look at it as making the responsible decision for society to not have children that I cannot properly provide for. I don't want kids and I definitely won't give in to peer pressure to have them. Not everyone is cut out to be a parent and not everyone should breed just because they can. 4951

I definitely agree with that...if you don't want kids, DON'T HAVE THEM! Having kids is a big choice and a huge responsibility, not an "obligation". I'm ALL for those not up for it choosing not to.

I just read something different into your post. Maybe I was mistaken.

But don't judge parents for having to give up an animal for whatever reason after having a baby when you can't possibly even pretend to understand the dynamics surrounding such a decision. You can get as high and mighty as you want based on what you THINK you know, but you would just be blowing smoke until you walked in those shoes. Ask any parent if you don't believe me. To judge someone as "lazy" based on something you know nothing about is out there.

And btw, the animal thing doesn't personally apply to me. We chose not to get a family pet until our youngest was old enough to understand the responsibilities of it. She was was a rescue and we still have her (and love her) 3 yrs later. She is a great dog (gsd) who is playful, obedient, protective and incredibly smart. Never causes any problems and is an indoor animal. But if she ever crossed one of my kids and hurt them (highly unlikely), she would be gone, no questions asked! I would be really sad if that ever happened, but dogs are ANIMALS. Can't imagine our dog dog ever turning, but if she did, our kids would come first, period. 4951

There are some legitimate reasons that parents have for giving up a pet due to a child, and then there are sorry excuses.

I have beef with the people who give sorry excuses like the two I mentioned.

It also pisses me off when idiots expect their dog to act like a human and be cool getting abused and annoyed by a child poking, prodding, sitting on, riding, and pulling at it, and then get totally surprised when buddy bites the kid so they send him off to die at a shelter. When the root of the problem is the parent not teaching the child boundaries and respect. Dogs are animals with teeth that do not have the ability to reason. Best quote ever: "Treat your dog like a human and he'll treat you like a dog!" 4951

No ,the babies dont exert leadership, but the dogs sense it us helpless . My dogs had no experience with a baby, but they sensed how i took care of baby. Right away they gaurded baby and have never so much as growled at her. I did not have to correct their behavior at all. 4951

I agree with  XJX here.
It comes down to knowing your pet and still monitoring the situation..  as far as having kids or not having kids that is a personal decision for each person, it does NOT matter what the reason is.  It would be much worse say for someone like XJX who has dedicated her life to dogs to bend to the pressure and have a kid that she did not want or that could be put in harms way...  JMO - Also my opinion is IF she did decide to have kids she would be a GREAT mom, because of her dedication to her passions.

N+t
One thing I did when baby was little..I would put her in her carseat and then put the carseat in my stroller . ( they went together) Then, I would wheel her around...a mobile bassinet...and take her with me when I showered, ate, used the facilities. She never left my sight. It worked out great for me. Plus, when baby won't sleep you can wheel them over next to dryer or dishwasher. They will fall asleep right away. Thank me later for tid bit of info I came up with by trial and errorEmoticon 4951
