As someone else mentioned it's very important that the dogs know their below the child in the pack. 4951

We didn't have any issues. We still loved our dogs.We gave the dogs attention, and they knew the baby was part of the pack, and took precedent over them. But they learned that from our actions, not reactions. If they see the human takes top billing over them, they get it. 4951

When I had my babies, my dogs seemed really happy about it... is that silly??  It seemed that they totally understood what was going on and how important it was to me and my husband..  I made sure they felt part of the whole thing....   It's not rocket science....  Its like when you have a second child you have to be sure to include the first... 4951

The dog is a dog not a baby or frog. 4951

There is no way a dog will respect a baby as higher ranking. Babies are just not physically or mentally able to exert that type of leadership over a dog. What parents need to teach is mutual respect and boundaries to both child and dog. 4951

No ,the babies dont exert leadership, but the dogs sense it us helpless . My dogs had no experience with a baby, but they sensed how i took care of baby. Right away they gaurded baby and have never so much as growled at her. I did not have to correct their behavior at all. 4951

Maria, that's awesome that you have good dogs! Many dogs need training though when it comes to a new baby in the house. A parent should never let their guard down. A husky mauled a baby to death a couple weeks ago. The mom let her guard down for a second and left the baby and the dog alone together while she went to the bathroom. Dog saw an opportunity to attack and kill. Unfortunately many dogs do not innately know they should respect and protect a baby. 4951

eta often times dogs see babies as competition for attention and resources. Especially if the dog came first and was the one being babied all this time. The article I link will explain further. 4951
