Just a reminder: Â Defending yourself or others (either at your home or with a CHL/LTC) is NOT a license to murder. Â The object of defending yourself or others is TO STOP THE THREAT. Â Once there is no more threat, you have to stop shooting or you could face homicide charges. Â Obviously this is not an easy thing to distinguish as it is happening. Â If the threat is obvious and the threatening person happens to die from your defensive shooting, prosecutors will likely not file charges or send it to a Grand Jury. Â However, if you stand over an incapacitated threat and continue to pump bullets into him/her, you could very well be chargedThis also applies to a threat that is running away from you. Â In that case, there is no more threat, so chasing him/her down and shooting them makes YOU the aggressor and could result in criminal charges against you.In addition to the possibility of homicide charges, there is always the likelyhood of the dead person's family suing you.Defending your home during a home invasion is usually clear cut, Â but NEVER say "I shot to kill him" to anyone. Â Your stand must always be that YOU SHOT TO STOP THE THREAT.
