I guess it's one thing to break into a car or Rob a home with no one home. But, anyone who does a home invasion with people home deserves an unhappy ending. It is a violent act that justifies them being shot.

By the way isn't this the second killing in the neighborhood recently?

Lots of great home-defense advice on this thread, but there are some caveats:  Shooting for the head or hip:  Both are excellent targets to immediately stop an intruder, but require LOTS of practice to be able to regularly hit targets of that size.  Add in the effects of a boost in adrenaline will make it more difficult to hit what you're aiming for.  Aim for the center-of-mass and keep shoting until the threat is stopped.  Don't try for the head or hip until you become VERY proficient with your firearm(s).Shotguns for home defense:  An excellent choice for home defense AS LONG AS YOU UNDERSTAND that at typical home/room distances, the shot does spread out very much.  It's not like TV or movies where shotgun shot spreads immediately.  At 20 feet, you'll likely have a pattern that you can cover with a book.  Therefore, you still need to "aim" a shotgun unless/ until you practice point shooting.  In our previous house with narrow hallways, I used a pistol grip pump shotgun.  A pistol-grip shotgun is difficult to aim and, even worse, the recoil is very substantial.  I do not recommend pistol-grip shotguns for most people unless you are willing to practice with the shot-shells you will use for defense.  I now have the full shoulder butt-stock on this shotgun but can fire it without bringing it to my shoulder.I keep the 12 gauge pump shotgun with an 18.5 inch cylinder bore barrel next to my bed loaded with #4 buckshot followed by 00 buckshot.  I have several loaded 9mm pistols in different rooms of the house.   There will always be differences of opinions on the best firearms, the best caliber, the best ammo, etc, etc.  I feel the key is to find a gun you are comfortable with, can become fairly proficient with, is reliable, and has reasonable power (IMO a .380 is minimum, but a .22LR will do if it's the only thing available).Added:  As mentioned previously (in jest), there IS a possibility of TOO POWERFUL a gun for home defense.  You have to consider other people in your house AND your neighbor's houses.  If you shoot at an intruder and the bullet kills a family member or a neighbor, think of the pain and possibly criminal charges you could face.  For that reason, most center-fire rifles are not a good choice for home defense, including AR-15's and AK-47's. 4951

Bless the young man who died, he made a poor choice in a very strange world. May his momma find solace.

@XavierParedez: "Very Strange World"? as in people who protect them self and property?  His momma and daddy should have done a better job raising the POS.  Now someone has to live with having to kill him.

I often tell people, situations like this make me wish I had the power of resurrection.  Then I could resurrect the guy and kill him a second time, so people know I meant it. 4951

The criminals are becoming more and more brazen. How crazy to break into an occupied home on Christmas Eve.

I am glad these people practiced their 2nd amendment rights and were able to protect themselves. It is unfortunate that a young life was lost but I suppose that is the chance you take when you choose to be a thief.

God bless the young man that protected his family and hopefully he will be able to cope with having to take a life to do so. 🙏

@dmaert:

The man who shot him was no better a he was selling drugs and was under question already

Where is his momma apologizing for the scum son?

@Stealth83:

Sits funny because the man whose house he was in was also a scum buddy (; selling drugs and alk that other good stuff his house was in question. The fact he'd bring attention to his own house with his family living there is enough to call him a scum as well but I bet you wouldn't do that would u? 4951

@Retired_Engineer: good stuff RE

But where do you keep firearms when you are not there ? Just don't want to come home and the intruder has my weapons waiting for me to get home ?
