Is staying here in Kingwood worth it after all these power outages? I love Kingwood but man these power outages are out of hand. It making me want to move to another location. For those who have been here for longer then 5 years what's your opinion?

Dingo71 :
I don't know if you have power lines going to your house. I do here in the Unincorporated area of KW. I had tree limbs rubbing up against the lines to my house. I had them cut away from the lines and haven't had a problem losing power since… except someone crashing into the power pole or trying to steal copper wire.

Dingo71 :
I've been here since 1998. We do like it and when we downsized homes we stayed in Kingwood. I did save up in advance for a whole house generator though and life has been good other than traffic! If I left Kingwood, I would leave Texas and move back up north.

If I were dependent on power for medical issues I may consider a new location or a generator. I am not willing to relocate my home and family due to minor inconvenience that can happen anywhere.
I feel im going to have some type of issue no matter where I live. Better the devil you know than the devil you dont.

Overall, Kingwood is a really nice place to live. The power outages are annoying but not enough to move.

Dingo71 : It really comes down to weighing out the pros and cons and what fulfills your life the most. Cons: constant outages, prone to flooding, terrible traffic with limited ways in and out, increasing crime rates. Pros: Lots of trees and beautiful greenery, nice green belts, bubble aka community, it's near the lake, do you have friends or family here? That would be a big pro, it's not far from Bush airport, lots of grocery stores and restaurants. It really depends on what works best for you and your life.

Dingo71 :
I was ahead of the times. I was terrified of having no heat in 22 degree weather so I got a generator. Honestly who knew we would be using it as much as we do. There are so many things I like about Kingwood. But if I didn't have a generator I don't know if I would stay.

Dingo71 : While it is frustrating, a whole home generator is a solution to the frequent outages, and really cheaper or on par with the cost of moving. Moving is expensive if you have a normal-size Kingwood house and pay movers to do the heavy lifting. Also, closing costs on a new home easily add up to some money that could just be spent on a good generator install to stay where you are. That's my opinion, of course, having moved in the last couple of years. There's also the possibility that you could move to a different suburban Houston community that also experiences frequent outages. Woodlands was built better, with most of the high-voltage lines buried from the start (George Mitchell was a smart man), so you could in theory have far less outages there.

buffaloglenn : As someone who adores The Woodlands and does a whole lot of life there, I will say they did a wonderful job master planning that community. They definitely have more pros when it comes to shopping, entertainment, and dining. There's less flooding, fewer outages, and those expensive homes tend to hold their value. But it's also a higher overall cost of living, taxes out the butt, there's always some marathon or event going on rerouting things, and the traffic is ALWAYS absolutely AWFUL. There are other places nearby that I'd buy over it, but still continue to visit often. If moving (somewhere else) wasn't an option, a whole home generator is vital for someone living in KW imo.

Dingo71 : We've been here for 36 years. After Harvey, we bought a Generac. It's a shame that our power dependability is so bad that we need to spend $10k as a backstop to keep power to our homes.

I raised my kids in KW in 2005; stayed there for 10 years, then sold my home and moved. There were some outages during bad weather, but not Nearly as many , as now. It really seems that KW power is Very trying now. As we say.." if a bird sneezes, the power goes out". You can move nearby and not have the problems, yet go back to shop/eat/visit, when you want to.
