I've never seen this issue addressed on the Chat Forum before and I'd like to get comments on it. Hopefully, someone from Humble ISD reads this and can provide an "official " answer. Dear granddaughter is finishing her first year of middle school band and loves it. She's doing a great job and is even taking private lessons. But she has already told her parents that she doesn't want to continue with band in high school because she doesn't want to march. Heat is a major factor. I can understand this. I was in my HS band in San Antonio and really disliked the summer practices. Early morning or late evening, it was still hot. The spring parades were always bad heat-wise. So, here's my question. Why can't the band students who don't want to March be allowed in switch over to the orchestra in high school? From what I understand, strings are the only orchestra instruments allowed in the school orchestras. Does anyone know why? A friend from Ohio has 2 children and a granddaughter who were allowed to do this. That way they didn't have to stop playing (in a group) the instruments they enjoyed.

I would go to the school website and send the band or orchestra teacher àn email. . I don't see why you couldn't start orchestra if you are changing schools? It's not like you are already in the band there and want to switch during the year.

Thank you for your suggestion. I think the problem is that the Humble ISD orchestras only allow string instruments, not wind instruments. Maybe it's too costly to hire a conductor who is capable of handling both. I don't know.

Years ago, the entire band participated in marching because of size. And band took the place of physical education because of marching. If the student isnt marching they should be required to take PE.
The string orchestra is offered at schools that have a large enough student body that play strings. String instruments are not normally played in a marching band. Thus a need for separate class.
A music conductor can conduct all instruments. Reading music is the same regardless of instruments

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I understand that string instruments are not in a high school band. And yes, I understand marching band takes the place of PE. It did for me when I was in high school. Obviously, those details would have to be worked out. I think it would take a more advanced person to be able to conduct an entire orchestra. Strings, wind instruments and percussion are a lot to handle at one time.
