Sorry, this is so long but I am very upset and I am going to ask for some help from members that are using or have used Lake Houston Smiles Dentistry. I have never had teeth issues until this year so I have many bills. Most people have a PPO or HMO or a plan that also has a contracted rate between dentist and insurance company. This means you can not be charged anything above the contracted rate. After reviewing my EOBs (explanation of benefits) they are not writing off the difference between billed amount and contracted rate and billing me. Spoke with office mgr and she said I am responsible. After getting no where I had a 3 way call office mgr, insurance company and me and I became aware they have a 3rd party posting payments ONLY and are not approved to write off the difference. The office doesn't receive the actually EOB with the codes so they do not see the break down. I paid $700 for one visit and only should have paid $167. Still waiting on refund. If I didn't review my EOB I wouldn't have known. With dentistry being so expensive they offer credit from companies and where they get paid in full and you make interest free payments. Well, so far I have over 5k on the card and actually owe 2k. No credits posted as of yet. I can bet with the office not adjusting the write offs everyone is over paying. I watched a older gentleman come in the office with a HMO and was having a tooth pulled. They told him it was $1400 for his out of pocket and he paid it. He is not going to know to call the office and ask for his refund. This is call insurance fraud. I am shocked and sickened that they are doing this to their patients.
If they do not get a payment up front they get from the interest free companies so they have their money. Yes, I brought it up to my dentist and she doesn't understand that side of the practice and office mgr in front of her said this is an isolated incident? WTF! It can not be if no one does the adjustments. Sorry, but if anyone has EOBs for services from them and or having issues could you please respond or DM me. Thanks so much!!!

I can understand why this is so frustrating! if you are due a refund and do not get it ,I would probably call one of the consumer affairs reporters like Amy Davis on channel 2, and see if she will look into it. She is great about getting real answers on things like this!
I am just shocked. Office Mgr told dentist they have every contracted fee for all codes in system for every plan, which is false. She kept saying she was helping me to the dentist. Well, yes cause I brought it to your attention and knew how insurance works. I did this for over a decade and know how it works. What if a code was rejected because they need for information well that EOB doesn't go to the office mgr so how will she know what is needed. Sorry, I am venting. I might give just do that but really need more than mine for back up.
I would stop dealing with the dentist office. This here is where I'd start. After getting no where I had a 3 way call office mgr, insurance company and me and I became aware they have a 3rd party posting payments ONLY and are not approved to write off the difference. Your insurance company literally heard them say they aren't honoring the contracted prices and did nothing? You should be escalating that with your insurance company. There is not mystery here. This is precisely what you are paying your insurance company for. I would also consider filing a complaint:
tsbde.texas.gov But what they are doing almost certainly isn't legal - but I'm not a lawyer.

I am thinking filing a complaint but would love to have a few more people with this issue. Pretty much anybody that has been there most likely has a messed up bill and don't know it. I would like to help them to see if they overpaid and help get their refund. Just want more proof.
Had a Kingwood dentist carelessly pull the wrong tooth once. But this wasn't him. ALWAYS review medical paperwork and report errors to the insurance company.
sweetie, justanirishgirl and RaggedyAnn reacted I would normally say to try to make sure the dentist is on a conference call with the insurance company and the lady who does billing, but she has already given it all 'the big shrug', it seems? Maybe contact the BBB re their business practices but I suggested contacting the reporters because it seems like the office's lack of 'understanding' is a form of stonewalling.
The Office Mgr kept interrupting every time I was making a point saying it should be between us and not the dentist. Really, if you get audited it is on the Dentist not you to which I made very clear.
I have a few thoughts here.
First off, dental insurance is notoriously terrible. It doesn't pay nearly as well as even poor medical insurance. That's just the way it is. If it covers even half your bill, you're doing well.
Second, my main rule of choosing a dentist is to NEVER go to a chain dentist. While all medical providers are running a business, most run a health care facility first and a business second. These chain places are there to bump the bottom line. They are businesses first and health care facilities second. The manager of each branch is called on the carpet periodically and pressured to increase the bottom line constantly. They do this by cleaning out every available dollar from your pocket every time you walk through the doors. Unnecessary procedures, charging for every little thing, not honoring insurance agreed upon pricing, billing "mistakes" that are constant and always miraculously in their favor, up-selling, selling additional products and cosmetic dentistry services and the list goes on and on. They are money mills, pure and simple.
It's coincidental that this topic was raised today, as I just found out that the small office dentist that I have gone to since we moved here and who I was really happy with is retiring immediately due to a personal medical issue. I have to reluctantly find a new dentist ASAP. I don't know who I'm going to go to, but I sure as heck know what type of office I'm not going to go to. I'm going to be looking for a small one dentist office that's owned and operated by the dentist working in it in the Delta Dental Insurance network.

Ticagro: I use Dr. Introligator behind the Starbucks on Kingwood Drive and have been very happy with them. The office is great.
For the past 25 yrs I have been going to Dr Kevin Butler and he was taking Delta dental. Of course as our insurance changed I started having problems and had to find a dentist fast.
