If you buy a dog from a shelter or private responsible breeder then you are buying from a breeder either way. When $$ changes hands then you are buying. AKC breeders were the original rescuers and still do rescue.

Doddlebug50 : I don't get this. AKC breeders don't rescue dogs off the streets who are homeless. They breed only purebred dogs. And dogs in shelters, the vast majority, are mixes who never came from a breeder.

Matteo came from a breeder. They are inspected by TDLR and the AKC yearly, he has been genetically tested and a health guarantee. His AKC registration cannot go to any offspring which is a reputable breeders way of helping to prevent puppy mills.
A lot of pet stores do use puppymills and I cannot imagine spending $6500 on a dog without seeing and knowing the health of his surroundings and parents.

MissAmericanPie : I worry less about AKC breeders than those offering CKC "registration..all those "doodle" mixes are about 99% from a puppymill.

I never knew of pups costing 6,500.00 dollars. Is crazy.

I haven't seen a pet store in ages! After they got caught being involved with puppy mills, they all disappeared. At least most of them.I've never been opposed to the purebred dog industry. There is a market for people wanting, and paying for, expensive dogs. As far as the Doodle mixes, so far they have been fabulous pets. I see them everyday in my business and the over breeding problem like we saw with Chihuahuas, Cockers and small poodles hasn't happened yet. The CKC? Idk much about that whole thing but I've not seen a sick or unhealthy or neurotic doodle mix…..yet.

It is a pet store grift that people sign up on a lease to own program for some puppy they want.... the actual cost might be 2/3 or 3/4 less than the credit charges. You find those issues with the chain pet stores Puppies R Us and all that.

MissAmericanPie : there are 3 within a couple of miles of each other in the woodlands. My step dog is a golden doodle that we watch often. Sweet dog, but he takes 15-19 pills a day for cancer and seizures. They are being terribly bred.
