MaineLady : What is a dmo? I've had a lot of dental work from cleanings to implants but can't think of what a dmo might be.

No it was not. They are charging for stuff they know is not covered and pass the charge to me. They said the X-rays at initial appt was complementary but guess not. It will be when I call them!

DMO is a dental maintenance organization which operates similarly to a medical HMO. I avoid both.

We always take the most expensive ins package with the most coverage. Never had dental issues until we got the DMO. Go figure.

So DMO is a general term? Many companies offer a DMO? If so, what is the company that is giving you such poor treatment with its DMO? I'd like to avoid it myself in the future.

My first rule when seeking dental care is to avoid the chain type operators at all costs. All medicine is a business of course, they need to keep the lights on. However I find that these dental chain type operators blatently put the business end before the medicine. Their prime goal is to pull as much money as possible out of your insurance and your pocket before you walk out the door. I believe they all have financial targets set at the home office that they are pressured to meet. They tend to come up with all type of procedures you need that you had no idea you "needed".
The other ones I run away from are those who try to be some sort of health care or dental spa. I went into a dentist on Northpark before I found the dentist I have now, and they wanted to give me champagne, they had racks of products that the told me I needed to buy, they found all sorts of cosmetic procedures that I had never heard of that I supposedly needed, etc. I got the heck out of there and never went back.
I've been happy with my old school dentist who does a great job, they're super people, he fills the hole or fixes the tooth if I have a need and sends me on my way.

We've used Kevin Butler as our dentist for 30+ years. He's very talented and a really nice guy. His staff is great too.

DMO plans have a network of dentists and specialists who have agreed to provide services at a pre-determined cost. Be careful with these types of plans they tend to have lower reimbursement. I recommend doing your own research.

Smoothwaters : That sounds like a nightmare. You might be better off going with a dentist that offers insurance. The insurance my dentist offers is is called Dental Care Advantage. On your first visit, X-rays and Exam are $99.00 and your cleaning is 30% off.

Well said. I am looking for a single dentist office not going through this again. So mad I can not sleep. I have looked up how to file a complaint with the Texas Board of Dentistry.

Smoothwaters : Dental work is off the chart expensive. And the bill is almost impossible to understand. My dh was very good at it tho. One dentist over charged us by 1k. Yep, 1k. We proved it to them, insurance proved it to them, they conceded they indeed they did over bill. It took them a YEAR to pay up. You know how they finally paid? DH walked into that office one day and announced he was not leaving without a check. He left with his thousand bucks. This is a local dentist. His wife managed the finances. There had been rumors but we paid them no mind. I wont call it cheating but there was something going on. I'll be generous & call it incompetence.
