I had a similar situation at my house this morning. But it was not the house plumbing causing the problem , but my own personal plumbing.
On another note, sewer gas backing up thru a toilet is usually cause by blockage somewhere. It could be a drain blockage or vent blockage not allowing air to vent and building up pressure blowing past the p-trap. It could also possibly be caused by work/cleaning of the main sewerline building up pressure.

mellen: My plumbing also makes that weird noise. Normally occurs right after coffee. lol

Mine makes a horrible sound when kids throw fireworks down the storm sewer.
