mellen : If I were the victims in this case I would take my money and leave Wells Fargo. It sounds to me like this may have been an inside job.

From the article:

"Wells Fargo originally denied the Leon's claim, even accusing Joan of taking part in the scam."

I get the feeling some people in Wells Fargo's fraud prevention department do this as a matter of routine...

Once when I had someone steal my card and take out money, the Wells Fargo representative told me that "We have you on camera taking out the money,"...I'm guessing they're bluffing to see the person's reaction. Bluffing and accusing someone of a jailable crime, if that's what happened, is not exactly ethical on Wells Fargo's part, IMO.

mellen :
Is it me or was that article leaving a lot of questions?? How did it actually happen? Did The person representing WG call HER? Was she actually seeking to do something online? And someone to physically pick up a card is unheard of and red flag #1.if it was someone actually employed by WF, they can get your info except a pin I think?

MissAmericanPie : From the article: HOUSTON - Joan Leon had every reason to believe she was talking to Wells Fargo. But she says the bank later told her they got "scooped," meaning unauthorized parties intercepted phone lines and accounts.
What they're saying:
She checked and says the phone call was coming from her local Wells Fargo branch, which she says made her feel even more secure.
The supposed fraud Representative told Joan to cut the card in half, and someone with the fraud department would come by and pick it up.

It sounds to me like they called her and her phone said it was her local Wells Fargo. Then again she could have been calling them cause they say the call was intercepted in another part of the article. It is a confusing article and I would love to ask follow up questions. You would think there is a way to make their lines more secure to keep them from being intercepted. Who knows! More info is needed! I would still change banks.

Why in the world would anyone allow someone to come pick up a destroyed card- whether you believed it to be the fraud dept or not? We've been hacked a couple of times and never once did the bank say we will pick up the card.
I will tell you a story that could've been an inside job. We were on the way to buy a car. Hubs got a text from the bank asking if he made this charge on his business account ( we keep a tight lid on how much and where our debit cards are used). The charge was small but was suspect because it was made in London UK. He texted No. Fraud dept calls immediately and he answers it and it disconnects. Next thing we know a transfer is made from our savings account to his business account and poof it's gone. We immediately call the fraud dept and shut down his card, my card , our credit card. We spent hours on the phone with their fraud dept. They returned the money that day and issued us new cards. The final report said that a man called the bank had all of hubs info and asked that money be transferred from our savings to his business account. The thing is the bank doesn't allow telephone transfers because there's no way to confirm the callers ID even if they have all the right answers. So it had to be an inside job. Now we have a 2 factor authentication on all the accounts every time we log in or go to the bank.
Talk about scary

We have been lucky and blessed with Chase. 2 dollar coke transactions denied on card as this was a means, years ago, to lead to larger transactions. Three times in one year was attempted.
PF Chang had issues with one stealing card numbers. DH and buddies all had numbers stolen. Chase shut transaction down.
They have been great with their fraud dept.

Labslady : OMG, That is scary! I'm glad the bank took care of it right away. This does seem like and inside job!

TEXASGIRLMAMMA :
People can be dishonest no matter where they work. My neighbor had medicine stolen and the person was working in the Kingwood post office.

mutton :
Chase is good. We wrote a sizeable check and their faud department called concerned that, as we are seniors, someone was scamming us. It wasn't just simple one or two questions, it was a full conversation where I had to convince them it was a legitimate transaction. 😆

Kittle : When we move chunks of money from there to investment accounts they always call. I think they want our investments there, lol. I tell them bugger off...
